Description

The Northwest School is a college-preparatory, co-educational independent school near the heart of downtown Seattle. We offer a rich and challenging program to roughly 400 students in grades 6 through 12, including international students, many of whom live in our campus dormitory. The Boarding Program provides students with a comfortable and safe home away from home. Residential Advisors provide holistic support for dormitory residents including leading activities and educational programming, providing academic support, and emergency and crisis response. Boarding students during the academic year are in grades 9-12, summer camp may include grades 6-12. This is a 12-month position including academic school year and summer camp responsibilities. The position reports to the Residential Life Coordinators, who report to the Upper School Director. 

The Northwest School seeks Residential Advisors who love interacting and engaging with students. The School strives for its faculty and student body to reflect the diversity of the society in which they exist, and candidates from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. We are currently hiring for all shifts, with priority for afternoon/evening and overnight shifts. Afternoon/evening shifts typically come in 8-hour increments and begin at 1pm or after. The overnight shift is typically 12midnight to 8am. Full-time (30-40 hours a week) and part-time (less than 30 hours a week) positions are available. Full-time positions are benefits eligible. Resident Advisors do not live on campus, and room/board is not included in the compensation package.  

Essential Functions Include:  

  • Facilitate a safe, friendly, and comfortable environment for residents, guests, and fellow faculty. 
  • Assist residential students with their transition to the Northwest School, living together in a boarding program, and (for international students) the acclimation to the United States. 
  • Design and implement programming with the purpose of building community, increasing opportunity for interaction and belonging. This includes but is not limited to mealtime programming, off-campus excursions, and on-campus social and educational events. 
  • Review and approve student passes and attendance logs, and track arrivals and departures, as well as student attendance at meals and events. 
  • Provide academic support with school assignments during and outside of study hall hours. Refer students to appropriate school resources and faculty as needed. 
  • Share student information with faculty with discretion/as necessary to support student success.  
  • Attend and participate in ongoing Boarding Faculty meetings and training sessions, as well as school meetings and training sessions as directed. 
  • Work collaboratively with all school faculty and students. 
  • Monitor condition of facilities, and report concerns to Residential Life Coordinators or Facilities department as appropriate. Assist with weekly student room checks and Environment (student cleaning of spaces.) 
  • Drive school vehicles as necessary for activities or transporting students to the airport.  
  • Complete shift logs during and upon the conclusion of each shift 

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

  • All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the school’s mission, values, and philosophy, especially related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; environmental sustainability; and global perspective.
  • A bachelor’s degree and one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of skills and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position are required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a productive member of a team.
  • Ability to get along with people of various cultures and backgrounds.
  • Experience in a childcare facility or childcare program
  • First Aid/CPR Certification – can be obtained upon hire
  • A valid driver license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an educational/school setting
  • Experience in with a boarding program in an educational setting
  • Experience working with international students
  • Multilingual

Compensation:

Compensation is at an hourly rate between $19.97-$22.58 per hour (depending on shift) and commensurate with education and experience.
