What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Associate position at The Ohio State University?
Serve active research programs in corn and alternative crops. The program operates out of Wooster Campus. The Research Associate will participate in planning, designing, executing, and managing research projects at the Corn and
Emerging Crops Applied Research and Extension program (Dr. Osler Ortez Lab).
The position will be based in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science (HCS), College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences
(CFAES).
Examples of activities include (but are not limited to) project plan preparation, goods procurement/purchases, communication with station managers/farmers/cooperators/industry, field activities coordination, trials establishment, data collection, plot maintenance, harvest of trials, work with graduate/undergraduate students, coordinate field
activities/measurements, and analysis/reporting of results (including peer-reviewed publications).
The program produces agronomic results on corn and alternative crop performance that are widely distributed among extension venues, growers, and industry. The position applies techniques and methods outlined by the senior
personnel and faculty principal investigator. This role demands strong leadership, collaboration, and project management skills to drive success and contribute to the advancement of agricultural research and extension. Additionally, there will be opportunities to collaborate on larger projects with industry and other land-grant universities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (100% RESEARCH):
- Assist in the planning, design, execution, and managing of Agronomy projects
- Assist in data collection of projects, including field, greenhouse, and Lab
- Analyze research results and write scientific and technical reports
- Collaboration, engagement, communication, and leadership
Collaborate effectively with peers to support programs. Communicate effectively with principal investigator, project leads, staff, students for timely activities, data collection, and outcomes across projects.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Agriculture is required.
- One year of experience working with agronomic crops and field research trials is required Three years is preferred.
- Ability to produce, adapt, and apply academic and/or practical knowledge in agriculture.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to coordinate and facilitate work activities in a timely and efficient manner.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and navigate Microsoft office software.
- Ability to perform statistical analyses, interpret results, and write reports.
- Flexible, weather-dependent work schedule, occasionally including weekends, to meet program’s objectives.
- Ability to communicate orally and written with faculty, staff, students, industry representatives, and farmers.
