JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Harrisburg, a comprehensive college of The Pennsylvania State University, invites applications for a research faculty position at the Assistant or Associate rank. This position will lead innovative research and outreach initiatives addressing the unique needs and challenges facing Latino communities in Pennsylvania and beyond. The successful candidate will drive research targeting Latino communities' needs and lead a team to establish Penn State Harrisburg as a leader in Latino studies within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This is a term funded position.

This is a 48-week non-tenure appointment in one of Penn State Harrisburg's five academic schools, determined by the candidate's expertise and background. The position is supported by the Institute of State and Regional Affairs (ISRA), which unites Penn State faculty and professional staff to conduct research and provide data services in public policy, community planning, information management, and evaluation. Annually, ISRA secures $3-$4 million in sponsored research funding from state, federal, philanthropic, and private sponsors. Job Description:

  • Lead and expand research initiatives focused on Latino communities, integrating multidisciplinary methodologies.

  • Secure funding through grants and partnerships to support ongoing and new research projects.

  • Serve as a principal investigator or co-investigator on research projects, guiding research directions and ensuring successful outcomes.

  • Foster collaborations with academic units, community organizations, and policymakers to enhance the institution's impact and visibility.

  • Promote the dissemination of research findings through publications, conferences, and public engagements.

  • Mentor junior researchers and students engaged in Latino studies and related fields.

Typical Experience:

  • Proven expertise in Latino studies, community research, or related fields.

  • Demonstrated leadership in managing research projects and teams.

  • Strong track record in grant writing and research funding acquisition.

  • Ability to engage with diverse academic and non-academic stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication skills and the capacity to serve as a spokesperson for the institution.

  • Fluency in Spanish to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders and community groups to support interdisciplinary research related to Pennsylvania's Latino population.

Position Level and Requirements:

This position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate rank.

  • Assistant Research Professor: Must possess a terminal degree or its equivalent in an academic field related to their research and must demonstrate ability as a researcher and show evidence of professional growth and scholarship in their discipline.

  • Associate Research Professor: Must possess a terminal degree or its equivalent in an academic field related to their research and must demonstrate exceptional ability as a researcher, including success in securing external funding, and show evidence of professional growth and scholarship.

This appointment is initially funded for one year from the start date, with a strong prospect of renewal.

The candidate must possess an earned doctorate or terminal degree prior to the start date. The individual will also possess strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills, grant and technical writing expertise, experience in research, public policy, public administration, sociology, data sciences, or related fields, and supervisory experience of staff at different levels. Additional duties include developing relationship management strategies to identify and pursue research opportunities and promote the University's resources and services. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven record of interdisciplinary collaboration and experience working with academic units.
