JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Veterinary Extension and Field Investigation Team at the Pennsylvania State University is looking for two motivated, enthusiastic, and resourceful veterinarians who enjoy working collaboratively to contribute to the Team's success and impact in extension, teaching and research. These positions will be a clinical, non-tenure track, 48-week appointment to the faculty of the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. Responsibilities will consist of 50% extension, 25% teaching, and 25% applied research.

Extension: In their extension role, the Extension Veterinarians will help fulfil Penn State's land-grant mission, serving Pennsylvania's dairy and livestock producers, veterinarians and allied industries, regulatory partners, and private industry, through the provision of proactive and reactive solutions to animal health, animal well-being, biosecurity, food safety, food quality and public health issues. The two positions will have different, but complementary, areas of focus/interest, to broaden the Team's reach and expertise. The successful candidates will work with the Team, and Penn State's Extension Program Units, to achieve these goals, increasing the Team's reach and impact. Extension activities will include, but not be limited to:

* Conducting in-person and online, science-based, educational programs, presentations, and workshops.

* Developing high-quality online resources in response to the needs of the livestock industries,

* Providing expert advice on disease prevention, food safety, and public health.

* Assisting private practice veterinarians, industry partners, and the Penn State Animal Diagnostic Laboratory clientele with the investigation of animal and herd health issues.

Teaching: The Team contributes substantially to the College and Department's resident education mission, primarily in the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences (VBSC) major. The successful candidates will be expected to:

* Bring a practical animal health and one-health perspective to the classroom.

* Lead and teach at least one resident education course in the VBSC major, in both the Fall and Spring semesters.

* Contribute their expertise and experience to other courses, by providing guest labs and lectures.

* Serve as an academic advisor for undergraduate students in the VBSC major.

Research: The incumbents will be expected to be successful contributors to the Team's and the Department's knowledge discovery efforts by:

* Leading and collaborating with colleagues in applied, practical, research and knowledge discovery efforts, focusing on topics of relevance to Pennsylvania's dairy and livestock industries and the veterinary community, such as antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, infectious and zoonotic diseases, food safety and quality, or other relevant issues and concerns.

* Obtaining intramural and/or extramural funding to support applied research efforts,

* Delivering presentations and posters at scientific meetings, as well as publishing abstracts, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and/or case reports.

* Participating or leading in the training and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students in research.

Required qualifications include:

* A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, or DVM-equivalent, degree.

* At least two years of clinical veterinary practice experience with one or more of Pennsylvania's production animal species.

* The ability to function effectively as a team member and collaborator.

* A positive and hard-working personality.

* Possession of a valid driver's license.

Preferred qualifications include:

* An MSc and/or PhD in veterinary medicine, animal science, or a related field.

* Board certification in a relevant field.

* Documented ability to develop and implement effective and impactful extension and applied research programs.

* Experience developing and delivering undergraduate education and mentoring.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Laboratory space and equipment will be available. Startup funds will be made available to the successful candidates, to assist with the initial development of effective and impactful research and/or extension programs.
