JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A Postdoctoral Scholar opportunity is immediately available for a highly self-motivated individual in the laboratory of Dr. Amanda Johnsen, Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering, at The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). The focus of the postdoc will be on a DOE-funded project, but parts of additional projects in the PI's research lab will also be included.

In a highly multidisciplinary laboratory environment, the candidate will work closely with the PI and other lab members to investigate novel dissolution methods for uranium-based nuclear fuels and assist with implementation of a molten salt irradiation rig at the Penn State Breazeale Reactor.

Skills that are used in the lab include: hands-on lab benchwork with radioactive materials; designing and conducting experiments; generate, analyze, and evaluate data; present results in an organized manner; learn new techniques and approaches in uranium chemistry; stay updated with latest advancement in the field and integrate them into research. Our laboratory is equipped with the ability to use radioactive materials and has access to world class facilities at the Penn State University Park campus.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • PhD degree in Nuclear Engineering or related field and academic preparation in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering (required).

  • Research experience in a wet chemistry laboratory (required).

  • Experience with MCNP and ORIGEN (required).

  • Ability to obtain unescorted access to the Penn State Radiation Science and Engineering Center (required).

  • Strong oral and written communication and organizational skills (required).

  • Must be highly self-motivated and hard working (strongly required).
