JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The School of Music in the College of Arts & Architecture at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Trombone position starting August 15, 2025. The ideal candidate is an accomplished artist-performer with a collaborative mindset and a strong commitment to creative, inclusive teaching practices. An earned doctorate, or a master's degree plus equivalent experience, is required.

The College of Arts & Architecture is working to establish a culture of anti-racism and anti-oppression that embraces individual identities, fosters a culture of inclusion, and promotes equity through curricula, values, standards, ideals, policies and practices. Please provide evidence for your experience with these goals in your cover letter, and define yourself and your approach to music in ways that let us envision the unique qualifications you would bring to the Penn State School of Music.

We seek an inspiring colleague who will help us view musical performance, teaching, and learning in diverse ways. We welcome applicants from the widest variety of pedagogical, educational, and musical backgrounds and styles. Current faculty and administration share an ethic of collegial responsibility and mutual care, so this new hire will receive solid mentoring, professional development, and support.

We seek an applicant who will maintain an active regional, national, and international performance profile, and develop a creative/scholarly agenda appropriate to an R-1 university tenure-track position. The successful candidate will have ideas for cultivating a vibrant, diverse musical population in our School, and has an innovative plan for recruiting undergraduates and graduate students from international, national, state, and local circles. The ability to nurture a studio community is essential. The successful candidate will have a keen sense of responsibility to community outreach and will be willing to make a substantial investment in local and state musical activities. The position requires university service duties appropriate to a tenure-track assistant professor.

The successful candidate will demonstrate solid, thoughtful undergraduate pedagogy and advanced graduate teaching. Instructional duties may include (but are not limited to) studio teaching for majors and non-majors, jazz teaching, chamber music coaching, repertoire class, brass pedagogy, brass methods, or other courses in the candidate's unique areas of expertise.

To apply, upload the following items. Screening of applications will begin on December 1, and will continue until the position is filled. Upon request, candidates should be prepared to submit additional materials documenting teaching effectiveness. Questions may be directed to Wanda Hockenberry, Assistant to the Director, wgs1@psu.edu.
