Job Overview :
The Lead Substation Engineer is responsible for leading or supporting project teams in the design and development of substation engineering projects. This includes creating General Arrangements for Substations, Equipment Plans, Elevations, Sections, Control House Layouts, Grounding Systems, Conduit and Cable Designs, Bill of Materials, and Cable Schedules.
Your Role and Impact :
Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to create and review reliable and efficient electrical design packages for both medium and high-voltage substations.
Lead the physical electrical design of substations, developing and reviewing site and equipment layouts, elevations, busywork, grounding grids, lightning protection, material lists, and more.
Conduct design studies to apply a comprehensive understanding of physical electrical substation design.
Oversee design coordination, ensuring that project schedules, budgets, and quality standards are met for successful project completion.
Participate in site visits, station walkdowns, estimating, and attend project meetings to ensure the project's success.
Ensure that all design activities comply with relevant codes, standards, and SNC-Lavalin’s policies and procedures (including Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance, and Quality Control).
Select appropriate equipment and materials, and prepare specifications for materials, equipment, and construction work.
Deliver thorough and precise electrical designs that adhere to industry standards and engineering best practices.
Review internal and external designs to ensure compliance with codes, quality design practices, and constructability.
Coordinate design activities with other project team members across disciplines to ensure alignment and efficiency.
Provide construction support by resolving site queries, attending meetings, and conducting site inspections during the construction phase.
Maintain comprehensive documentation for engineering studies, design packages, as-built requirements, and returned data.
Foster positive relationships with internal teams, such as Drafting, Project Management, and other engineering disciplines.
Guide and mentor junior engineers, supporting their development within the department.
What You Will Bring to the Team :
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
At least 10 years of professional experience in substation engineering, with a focus on senior or lead roles.
A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred for all roles and required for senior positions.
Proficiency with AutoCAD for creating and reviewing designs.
Previous experience in utility consulting is a plus.
Strong customer focus and client relationship skills.
Excellent communication abilities, both written and verbal, with a strong command of the English language.
In-depth knowledge of industry standards, including the National Electrical Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and IEEE.
Capable of working independently and as part of a team, with the ability to take full ownership of projects.
