GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):
The Math Specialist provides on-site instructional support to teachers to improve mathematics teaching and learning aligned with curriculum standards and research-based best practices. The Math Specialist is a facilitator of mathematical understanding for teachers; which will have an impact on student learning. This position is a 190-day school-year-based position.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in Education or related field
- Valid DESE teaching license in math or elementary education.
- Minimum of 5 years of successful classroom math teaching experience
- Experience leading professional development or instructional coaching
- Strong knowledge of math standards, curriculum, and pedagogy
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and facilitation skills
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):
- Support teachers across the district in unpacking and implementing math curriculum Collaborate with teachers to plan, model, and co-teach effective math lessons
- Facilitate professional learning communities (PLCs) focused on curriculum implementation, instructional strategies, and data analysis
- Support teachers in analyzing student work and formative data to inform instruction
- Engage with teachers in non-evaluative coaching cycles to improve instructional practices
- Lead or support district and school-wide math initiatives aligned with district goals
- Assist in identifying and addressing gaps in student understanding
- Organize, develop, and deliver professional development aligned with district goals and teacher and student needs
- Organize, develop, and deliver caregiver and community engagement events
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders and community members about the District’s work in the area of Prek-5 mathematics
- Stay current on research and trends in math education, adult learning, and instructional coaching
- Build teacher capacity to foster a growth mindset and problem-solving culture in the classroom
- Regular and on-time attendance is required
- Other tasks as directed by the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning or designee
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in a school environment, typically during the school day. There may be after-school meetings and the occasional need for an evening meeting.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear. Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building. Must have hearing and vision to a correctable normal range. Must have a valid MA drivers license and ability to visit multiple schools.
