Archival Processing Intern (Staff Wage)

The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia
Charlottesville, VA Intern
POSTED ON 3/29/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/28/2025

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia is seeking a graduate student or recent graduate for an archival processing internship focused on the William Faulkner Collection. This internship builds upon formal archival education by providing hands-on experience, supporting the Technical Services team in processing an archival collection.

The intern will perform archival duties such as collection surveying, arrangement, description, rehousing and labeling, and location management. They will receive training in archival practices and standards, collection handling, and finding aid creation in Archives Space while working under the supervision of experienced archivists and alongside other Special Collections professionals.

This experience will strengthen existing skills, introduce new ones, encourage collaboration and teamwork, and contribute to the intern's understanding of how archival theories and methods are applied in practice.

About the William Faulkner Collection (1824-2003)

The Faulkner Collection is the largest and most comprehensive archival collection of materials created by and relating to the American author William Faulkner. The collection spans 115 feet and is comprised of nearly 300 accessions. The collection has been partially processed by a professional archivist. A full inventory of the collection has been conducted, a detailed processing plan has been established, and the first two series have been completed (about 37 ft). The intern's work will generally follow the established processing plan but they may make recommendations for changes based upon their experience working with the collection. It is not expected that the intern will fully complete processing the collection; realistic goals will be set with the supervisor at the beginning of the internship.
