Responsible for physiologic monitoring of patient status via electronic systems and the notification of appropriate patient care team members in the event of a variance and/or audible alarm according to departmental policy. Patient data is documented in a timely manner according to departmental standards. Functions in a team lead capacity for other monitor technicians by providing in the moment education and assistance with the interpretation of complex cardiac rhythms. This team member serves as an expert resource outside of normal business hours.

  • Functions in a team lead capacity for other cardiac monitor technicians by providing in the moment education and assistance with the interpretation of complex cardiac rhythms.
  • Serves as a primary preceptor for new Cardiac Monitor Technician team members. Ensure that complex cardiac rhythms are interpreted accurately. Performs chart and telephone hotline auditson a bi-weekly basis. Independently troubleshoots Clinical Information Center (CIC) malfunctions, contacts Clinical Engineering only when necessary. Special projects and support activities are performed in an organized and timely manner. Assists with the mitigation of staffing variances. Responsible for the collection of daily patient utilization data. Maintains daily report sheet files and conducts purge as per institutional policy. Performs report sheet audits of significant patient safety events. Resource to Cardiac Monitor Technicians for Contingency Plans (Significant Outage of Monitoring Equipment, Evacuation, and Phone/Internet Outage). Serves as a liaison to direct supervisor.
  • Monitors patients using electronic systems. Monitor stations are manned at all times to ensure a safe provision of patient care. Monitoring responsibilities are handled in accordance with departmental policy. Proper functioning of equipment is confirmed per departmental policy and procedure. Malfunctions of monitoring equipment are recognized and communicated to the supervisor/appropriate staff immediately. Workstation is maintained in a manner to ensure continuity of workflow and patient care. Monitoring includes cardiac rhythm interpretation, end-tital carbon dioxide (CO2), and peripheral capillary oxygen saturation(SPO2). Alarm settings are checked and documented every two hours as per departmental policy. Physiologic monitoring orders are checked and documented every two hours as per departmental policy. Cardiac rhythm, heart rate, SPO2 andCO2 (data points) are documented every 2 hours as per departmental policy.
  • Identifies variances and initiates follow-up actions. A
  • Abnormal clinical signs, variances and audible alarms are recognized immediately according to established departmental criteria. Appropriate patient care team members are immediately notified of variance and/or audible alarms in accordance with departmental policy. Follow-up assessment and/or activities are initiated per departmental policy and procedure. In depth recognition and interpretation of data points. Patient safety is maintained at all times.
  • Documents patient data. Patient data is documented in a timely manner according to departmental standards; data points are documented every two hours as per departmental standard. Attention to detail with Patient data to ensure accuracy and thoroughness. Assistance is provided to staff upon request when entering patient data. Utilization of Electronic Medical Record (EPIC) to review patient orders, location, and throughput.

Information for patients and staff is delivered in a manner that is supportive, timely and understandable. Interpersonal conflicts are resolved using appropriate methods and organizational resources, including but not limited to Employee Relations Services and Faculty Employee Assistance Program. Clarification of communication is requested when appropriate.

Position Compensation Range: $16.31 - $25.28 Hourly

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent required.

Experience: 3 years as a Cardiac Monitor Technician at the University of Virginia Medical Center

Licensure: ECG Board Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Medicine or National Telemetry Association

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires sitting for prolonged periods. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Must be able to manage staff in the absence of supervisor.
