General Description:
The Barn Assistant is responsible for helping maintain the property and facilities and assisting with the care of horses and other farm animals. This position is mainly outdoors and in a barn environment with few indoor responsibilities. There is a great deal of physical work, including lifting 50 pounds several times a day, walking on uneven surfaces, twisting, squatting, and bending at the waist. This position is on Saturday and Sunday, 8 am - 5 pm.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 16 years of age
- Valid driver’s license
- Current auto liability insurance
- Ability to pass a criminal background check (if at least 18), DHR child abuse and neglect check (if at least 19), motor vehicle records check, and drug screens
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
- Ability to adjust working hours within reason to meet organizational needs
- Ability to understand and adhere to all safety precautions relevant to the position and the property, including safely working around horses
- Ability to use email
- Willingness to provide services to people with disabilities and special circumstances

Preferred Qualifications:
- At least one year of experience caring for horses and a barn
- High school diploma, General Education Diploma (GED), or other high school equivalency credential
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to manage stress, think analytically, and problem-solve
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Drive)
Responsibilities:
- Perform barn and facility tasks as assigned
- Ensure supplies are stocked and in place
- Assist with other daily tasks as needed
- Assist in programs as needed
- Other duties as required may include leading horses in/out of pastures or to/from stalls and crossties
Pay:
- Starting pay is $12/hour
- Regularly scheduled weekend hours are paid at a rate of regular pay plus $3/hour
