The Salvation Army Camp Kuratli at Trestle Glen will be a Christian sanctuary of rest, discovery, and growth for the neediest children in Oregon and Southern Idaho.

Scope of Position:

Under the discretion and direction of the Head Lifeguard, provide a safe and fun swimming experience while adhering to state and local operating procedures for the pool.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Hold current standard lifeguard, CPR, and first aid certifications.
  • Lifeguarding experience or 1 summer/year-round at pool.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Desire to work with youth.
  • Ability to supervise and provide guidance to staff and campers.
  • Ability to diffuse stressful situations with staff and campers.
  • Be a Christian with a strong, demonstrative commitment to following Jesus Christ, and biblical principles, who is enthusiastic, energetic, and creative in spiritual leadership.
  • Possess leadership skills with the ability to plan, originate, organize, and execute special programs.
  • Ability to teach and lead several activities.
  • Ability to communicate well with others from diverse backgrounds, ages, and nationalities.
  • Ability to work in groups.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to activities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and be comfortable working with a high degree of independence.
  • Ability to make independent decisions that may involve unique or unusual situations and/or complex issues and dealing with demanding requests or timelines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the discretion and direction of the Head Lifeguard:

  • Supervise all swimming activities during camp sessions and enforce pool rules.
  • Assist in weekly swim tests for campers on the first day of camp.
  • May plan and lead swim elective to teach campers to swim.
  • Assist in pool games for cabin activities and other scheduled swim events.
  • Help vacuum at minimum one pool each day on an alternating basis in collaboration with the Service Crew.
  • Maintain cleanliness of pool house, pool deck, and surrounding areas.
  • Help complete 3 water chemical tests for each pool daily in collaboration with the Service Crew.
  • Log cleaning supplies and equipment, testing chemicals, and water recreation equipment.

General Duties:

  • Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways to campers
  • Attend and participate in programs and spiritual activities.
  • Enforce respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Enforce adherence to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Ensure and provide supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
  • Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g., chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp-wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
  • Ensure and assist in the cleanliness of cabins and outside areas.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Youth Program Specialist, Divisional Youth Secretaries, and/or Camp Administrator
  • May be required to serve as Break Day Supervisor at times during the season.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike, and twist continuously for up to 15-20 minutes or prolonged periods at a time.
  • Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and on occasion up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform swimming rescues on swimmers in distress including approaching, breaking holds, and carrying people, which may require removal of the swimmer from the water (who may weigh from 50-300 lbs.).
  • Physical ability to respond to a variety of situations; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • There may be phone and in-person contact with others from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused, or frustrated.
  • May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility, and grounds.

MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment. The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check.

They must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a criminal history information check. Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude employment. The circumstances involved in the conviction(s) will be considered.
