Job Summary:
Under the shared direction of the Divisional & Regional Resource Development Director, Area Commander & Divisonal Development Director, the Area Command Resource Development Director is responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gifts from current and new donors and moving mid-level donors to the major gift level to achieve annual goals. The position works with the Area Commander, Area Command Development Director and Divisional CRD team to develop comprehensive development plans that include research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift donors and prospects; and support of other strategic efforts to meet annual goals and position The Salvation Army to undertake capital/endowment campaigns as necessary.

Gift Cultivation and Solicitation (80%)
Works collaboratively with the Divisional & Regional Resource Development Director, Area Commander, Area Command Development Director and Divisional CRD team to plan, develop, coordinate, and evaluate an aggressive major gifts program and variety of development strategies, to include special fund-raising events, to achieve short-range and long-range goals of the department and the area command.
Cultivates, solicits, secures, and manages a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects annually, using moves management concepts and tools.
Accompanies Area Commanders, Board/Council, volunteers, and staff on visits with donors and prospects; Monitoring all prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations.
Prepares solicitation materials as needed for individual, corporate and/or personal foundation prospects.
Utilizes systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects, including our donor database and wealth screening tools.
Updates, tracks, and maintaines contact and solicitation reports on a timely basisusing specific metrics.
Works with staff to identify and assign donors prospects for cultivation and solicitation.
Maintaines an effective working relationship with the Divisional & Regional Resource Development Director, Area Commander, Area Command Development Director and Divisional Headquarters Community Relations and Development Department) staff by sharing information that may enhance the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the area command fundraising efforts.
Participates in any capital campaigns as requested.
Prepares annual sponsorship packages.
Stewardship and Identification (15%)
With guidance from the Divisional & Regional Resource Development Director, Area Commander, Area Command Development Director and Divisional CRD team, partners with the fundraising staff to encourage and enhance donor engagement for the area command.
Participates, identifies and encourages attendance at donor recognition (social) events.
Ensures recognition efforts and stewardship efforts are included in solicitations strategies to effectively enhance donor relationships.
Acknowledges major donors through public and private recognition (i.e. annual reports, awards, acknowledgements).
Reviews and study various fund-raising periodicals and other related publications for identify new prospects for solicitation.
Handles special projects relating to stewardship, such as special correspondence, historical fund reports, testimonials, or other donor relations pieces.
Develops relationships and performs public speaking with the local and broader community to enhance and promote awareness and support of Salvation Army programs.
Administrative(5%)
Attends meetings as assigned that are pertinent to the promotion and support of The Salvation Army.
Participates as team player in all aspects of department operations based on team’s needs and goals.
Performs some administrative tasks to ensure the accomplishment and smooth operation of work.

Materials and Equipment:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of fundraising, major gift solicitation and gifts administration.
Knowledge and skill at donor customer service demonstrating tact, diplomacy and patience.
Knowledge of individuals, community agencies, organizations and corporations within the Area Command to support organizational efforts.
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge and awareness of fund raising practices and legislation in relation to fund raising and taxation.
Knowledge of effective and efficient recordkeeping practices and procedures, and development/fundraising functions within a nonprofit.
Skill in public speaking and effective individual communication skills, including by phone and with high level individuals and corporate executives.
Ability as a highly energetic professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing gifts in the five-figure or more range.
Successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Demonstrated leadership and the ability to successfully manage multi-functional or diverse areas.
Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments.
Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors to develop relationships between them and The Army.
Ability to move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
Ability to develop strategic, proactive relationships with potential donors, sponsors and corporate partners.
Ability to articulate The Salvation Army mission program objectives, exposure opportunities, and/or resource needs persuasively to obtain and meet annual solicitation goals.
Ability to plan, develop, implement and evaluate a variety of major gifts fund-raising strategies to determine their effectiveness in achieving short and long-range goals.
Ability to anticipate donor needs, discern priorities, and meet deadlines.
Ability to build and maintain positive, effective, and professional working relationships with internal and external communities.
Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work to accomplish in compliance with quality standards and deadlines.
Ability to make sound decisions and use discretion when non-routine situations arise.
Ability to take responsibility for a diverse number of projects, work effectively and efficiently on multiple projects under the pressure of deadlines and time constraints with limited supervision.

Ability to meet attendance requirements, attend events outside non-typical office hours; and travel to various locations on Salvation Army business in company or own vehicle.
Ability to perform all duties with an understanding and in accordance with of the mission, ministry, philosophy, culture, and protocol of The Salvation Army.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field,
And
5 years’ of progressively responsible experience in major gift fundraising and in identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual and corporate donors and prospects,
Or
Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certifications/Licenses:
Valid State Driver’s License

Duties are usually performed seated. Working Conditions:
