The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization has a job opening for a Food Service Manager for the New Orleans Area Command, New Orleans, LA.
Job Summary:
Plans, coordinates, participates, supervises and evaluates the day-to-day operations of a good services program; plans and develops menus; purchases food and maintains an adequate level of inventory for program needs; administers a good budget, ensures food service program operates in compliance with health standards, regulations and appropriate certifications; supervises, schedules, evaluates, and participates in the work of kitchen personnel including the cooking and serving of meals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Facilitates Child Nutrition training classes for staff three times a year. Ensures that all staff is certified by the SCHD (every two years). Prepares snacks and prepares plates of food for people eating after normal serving hours. Assists in coordinating and carrying our arrangements for programs and special events. Supervises volunteers assisting in preparing and serving meals and cleaning of kitchen equipment. Knowledge of the principles and practices of food preparation and management. Knowledge of property cooking methods and procedures. Knowledge of meal planning techniques. Knowledge of basis dietary and basic nutritional needs. Knowledge of health regulations governing the operation of public kitchens. Ability to lead, motivate, supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate employees. Ability to plan and cook nutritional, tasteful, and safe food for larch groups in a timely manner. Ability to ensure kitchen appliances are properly operated and maintained. Ability to order food and kitchen supplies in an economical manner and to maintain an adequate level of inventory. Ability to ensure kitchen operations conforms with local, state, and federal health regulations.
Experience and Education:
Two-year degree in food services, culinary arts, or related program and three years progressively responsible experience in food service management to include planning, purchasing, and preparing meals for large groups with one year experience in a supervisory capacity, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid state driver’s license may be required. ServSafe certifications required and must be renewed every five years or as required by the state and or county Health Department.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write and communicate the English language. Ability to cook, taste and smell food. Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light objects (less than 50 lbs.) 5-10% of work time. Work is performed in a normal office and kitchen environment where there may be limited physical discomforts associated with working around hot stoves/ovens or cold freezers.
