The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, a leading environmental education provider for the
Philadelphia region, seeks a passionate and energetic naturalist/educator to engage the public in
meaningful and innovative learning experiences in nature.
This is a part-time, year-round position with flexible hours; most programs take place on Saturdays and
on weekday evenings. This position provides a unique opportunity to act as the lead environmental
educator and be the public face for the Schuylkill Center on Saturdays, when a large volume of the
general public is visiting the Center, many times for the first time. This position reports to the Manager of
Public Programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Lead Schuylkill Saturdays, a free, hour-long weekly hike series. Hikes are often themed to
highlight seasonal nature observations. This program is led by a small pool of educators;
educators are expected to lead at least one hike per month.
- Lead or support other Saturday programming as needed, including birthday parties, scout
- Support public events by helping with set-up, registration, staffing the front desk, or other duties
- Research, develop, and update database of Schuylkill Saturday program content. Work with
- Clean and reset program spaces.
- Oversee cleaning and organization of common educational supply spaces, ensuring that supplies
are in good condition and accessible and that room is organized and well-kept.
- Assist with various duties as needed, such as filling bird feeders, folding trail guides, watering
Expected Competencies
A strong background in biology, natural resources, education, environmental/science education,
- 1-2 years work experience in education or life experience related to one or more of the following
- Demonstrated success at leading mixed-age groups through outdoor activities; teaching
- Ability to hike 2 or more miles each day at a pace that keeps up with children.
- Must be respectful and work well with a variety of people regardless of race, religion, gender
- Demonstrated effective written and verbal communications, and human relations skills.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described are representative of those that
must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable
accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
During most of the year, the Seasonal Environmental Educator spends the better part of their day
outdoors. The employee must be able to:
- Spend multiple hours outdoors in all weather (heat, cold, rain, snow)
- Hike 2 or more miles a day on rough terrain
- Engage in sustained physical activity throughout the day
- Have 20:20 vision (with corrective lenses) to provide oversight when leading groups
outdoors
Background Clearances: If hired, employees are responsible for providing a valid Pennsylvania child
abuse clearance, state criminal background check, FBI criminal background check, Mandated Reporter
training, and other background checks that the Schuylkill Center requires based on the applicant’s state
residency. First Aid/CPR training will be provided to applicants who don’t currently have it. Additionally,
as of September 2021, all hires are required to provide proof of vaccination.
Compensation
This position has a starting rate of $15/hr.
