Mendocino Railway is the owner/operator of passenger and freight railroads including the California Western Railroad / Skunk Train which operates between Fort Bragg and Willits, California.
The successful candidate for the position of Assistant General Manager (AGM) should possess an outgoing personality who interacts well with guests and the California Western Railroad / Skunk Train team. As the AGM you will be required to supervise, oversee, and direct work in all aspects of the railroad’s operations. This hands-on position will have the ideal candidate working in an office environment one moment, on the freight / construction side the next, on retail sales floor the next or in our food and beverage operations. This position supervises all facets of the railroad’s operation in Fort Bragg and Willits.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO)
- Involvement in managing day to day operations, including but not limited to schedules, events, ridership, sales, marketing, merchandising, staffing, safety, and compliance.
- Assists in the development and implementation of annual budgets. Monitors financial performance by measuring and analyzing business units, initiating corrective actions, and minimizing variances.
- Assist with the development of strategic marketing plans that includes financial goals, accountability roles, and timelines to achieve sales, profitability, and cash flow.
- Effectively communicates and ensures implementation of the growth strategies and processes.
- Supervises, manages, and mentors department heads and other personnel to ensure operations are staffed with well-trained, responsive, and engaged employees.
- Coordinates work schedules of contractors and company forces.
- Remains knowledgeable about the duties of all positions, by actively observing and participating in operations.
- Assists Transportation team in operational testing programs, including efficiency testing by observing, documenting, and evaluating safe work practices per GCOR (General Code of Operating Rules), FRA (Federal Railroad Administration), TSA (Transportation Security Administration), and CPUC (Califonria Public Utilities Commission) regulations along with company policies and procedures.
- Serves as a first responder to critical incidents on the property. Conduct incident investigations and prepares associated reports-derailments, personal injury, etc.
- Meets regularly with General Manager of the railroad to review financials, operations, and other matters.
- Fills in and replaces the General Manager in their absense.
- Work with team on product development and enhancements.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- 5 years railroad experience is preferred.
- 3 years management experience required.
- Undergraduate degree in Business, Hospitality, Transportation, or similar field preferred.
- Strong financial experience, including P&Ls, budgeting, and reporting.
- Demonstrated experience in sales, marketing, and event planning roles strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience working with private vendors (sourcing, bidding, contract negotiations).
- Self-motivated leader who excels at managing multi-level priorities simultaneously.
- Team-player attitude with the ability to demonstrate and foster positive collaboration and relationship building within and outside of the business.
- Ability to mentor and coach team members to deliver exceptional service.
- Excels at prioritizing tasks and efficiently managing time.
- Proficiency win Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and PowerPoint.
- Strong organization skills with an eye for details.
- Demonstrated ability to think and act quickly in responding to a variety of situations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the capacity to succinctly convey information.
- Visionary mindset with the ability to grow business operations in profitable ways.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- Must be able to handle medium to heavy work, lifting to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Must be able to stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/crawl/balance/climb and work in confined areas.
