What are the responsibilities and job description for the Post-Doctoral Research Associate: NSF Center for Analysis and Prediction of Pandemic Expansion (APPEX) - UTK position at The SMILE Fund?
The US NSF Center for Analysis and Prediction of Pandemic Expansion (APPEX), within the University of Tennessee, is a national research center dedicated to advancing understanding of how humans influence the risk that isolated outbreaks become global pandemics, mostly via mathematical and computational modeling. We are looking to fill multiple postdoctoral research positions each of whom will take the lead on the construction and analysis of quantitative models investigating multidisciplinary questions, participating in some of the many diverse APPEX research teams and working groups.
APPEX is now welcoming applications for post-doctoral research associates to work on the design, implementation, analysis, and dissemination of results from mathematical and computational models in pandemic science. These models can be rooted in any relevant field! Sociology? Computer Science? Psychology? Game Theory? Immunology? Physics? Ecology? Yes! Any/all of them! We want curious and creative quantitative thinkers who are interested in bridging the barriers among disciplines.
Postdoctoral researchers at APPEX will be expected to work with multiple (2-3) working groups/ project teams aligned with their interests and expertise, thus the position description focuses on the skills and perspectives that will round out a community of scholarship, rather than on particular research questions.
APPEX is centered at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, but also involves core researchers at many partner institutions. This position may be based either in Knoxville, working at the core APPEX offices, or may be embedded at a partner institution, working remotely to collaborate with Knoxville-based researchers most of the time, but involving a few trips a year (costs covered) to participate in-person in Knoxville events. Which is appropriate will depend on the field of study. Joining APPEX means joining a close-knit national community of scholarship in pandemic science.
