The Work You Will Do:

Equipment Operator / District Four / District Maintenance / Fort Lauderdale Maintenance - Admin


This position is responsible for performing minor maintenance in connection with any type of equipment operated. Upon obtaining the required CDL permit or license, the technician operates a variety of small to medium equipment—including dump trucks, loaders, graders, and asphalt repair trucks—for bridge and roadway maintenance. The role also includes leading and overseeing maintenance crews, using hand, pneumatic, and power tools to perform tasks with minimal supervision. Additional duties involve tree trimming, basic carpentry, masonry, painting, highway sign installation, and setting up temporary traffic control. The technician also assists with maintaining crew activity records while ensuring safe and efficient field operation.

Anticipated Pay:

$1,550.17 biweekly. A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $1,976.00 will be added to the annual salary.


Your Specific Responsibilities:

Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; Oversees crews performing maintenance activities.


Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.


Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.


Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.


The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations; standard safety rules and procedures.

Skills in:

  • Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools; operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.

Ability to:

  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment; read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms: maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures; communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions; develop and maintain effective working relationships with others; lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds; stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis; work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic; work independently; stand for an extended period of time.

Other Job-Related Requirements:

Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies when necessary. Possess a valid Class E driver’s license and obtain a Class B CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class B CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position. While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other

CMV safety-sensitive functions. Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains.


Minimum Qualifications:

Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles. A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire. A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.


This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

  • three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
  • any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
  • a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
  • a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years


Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.


In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. Click here to register for the Clearinghouse. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.


Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee. If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.
