CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • New employees of the Department of Military Affairs will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • New employees of the Department of Military Affairs are required to participate in a direct deposit/electronic transfer program.
  • The Department of Military Affairs is paid on a monthly basis.
  • This position is a Cooperative Agreement position.
  • As a CANDIDATE, you are required to provide documentation (i.e., High School Diploma or Equivalency, College Transcripts, ETC.) to verify meeting these Minimum Qualifications.
  • Must be able to obtain a completion of a favorable National Agency Check background investigation clearance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent; AND
  • Must be at least 18 years old; AND
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License; AND
  • Must obtain and maintain a minimum security clearance of SECRET per NGR 5-1ANGI 63-101 Chapter 36-10g; AND
  • The State of Florida Certificate of Compliance as a Firefighter (Not earlier than 1998)***Note***; AND
  • Firefighter (AFSC 3E731/51): Required Department of Defense (DoD) Certifications
    • Fire Fighter II
    • Airport Fire Fighter
    • HAZMAT Operations
    • Driver/Operator Pumper
    • ARFF & Tender
    • Completion of the DoD Fire Protection School
    • DoD Sponsored Career Development Courses (CDC) or equivalent certification accredited by International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or national fire service accreditation

All DoD certifications must be attained within twelve months of employment, including completion of the DoD Fire Protection School, DoD sponsored Career Development Courses (CDC) or equivalent certifications accredited by International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or national fire service accreditation.


***NOTE*** Applicants must submit a copy of their valid and active Florida Certification of Compliance as a Firefighter in order to be considered. Individuals with only DoD Certifications may challenge The State of Florida Certificate of Compliance for reciprocity with approval from the Florida Firefighter College. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be in good physical condition as determined by an annual medical examination as prescribed.
  • Be a nonuser of tobacco or tobacco products for at least 1 year immediately preceding application, as evidenced by a sworn affidavit of the applicant.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Emergency response: Respond to all emergencies as outlined by Departmental SOG/SOP’s and Mutual Aid / Reciprocal Agreements. Combat, control, and extinguish aircraft, structural, vehicle and wild land fires. Provide Haz-Mat responses and contingency responses (bomb threats, anti-hijacking, terrorist, etc.). Respond to weapons of mass destruction incidents. Aircraft emergency response. Engage in air crew extraction, passenger evacuation, and rescue. Performs aircraft arresting system rewind operations in a confined space. Administer oxygen to pilots as emergency dictates. Contain and control hazardous fuel spills and other hazardous leaks. Perform emergency forcible entry into aircraft. Enter and operate in aircraft danger zones to safety aircraft by pinning gears, weapon systems, and other ordinances while aircraft is running. Perform emergency and manual shutdown of aircraft. Maintain familiarity with all assigned aircraft and structures and proficient in firefighting ad rescue techniques for same. Must also be familiar with entire airfield and all Jacksonville International Airport facilities. Perform aircraft, airfield, and structural firefighting operational standbys. Respond to structural emergency alarms. Perform initial response and investigation as a minimum. Conduct building search and rescue operations. Perform forcible entry as situation dictates. Perform hydrant, standpipe, and resupply operations. Be familiar with alarm systems and fire suppression systems. Respond to motor vehicle incidents. Perform driver/passenger extrication. Contain and control hazardous fuel spills and other fluid leaks. Perform emergency shut down of vehicle. Provide emergency medical service for base populace and airport area as requested, not to exceed individual’s level of training. Perform blood pressure checks for base populace.
  • Operational readiness and preventive maintenance: Perform daily inspection of all firefighting apparatus and equipment as outlines in department SOG/SOP’s. Perform routine maintenance on firefighting apparatus and equipment.
  • Fire prevention: Assist with fire protection activities as outlined by departmental SOG/SOP’s. Conduct building life safety inspections, fire drills, fire hydrant and extinguisher inspections as directed. Assist in fire suppression system checks.
  • Fire alarm control center: Perform fire alarm control center operations and duties as outlined by departmental SOG/SOP’s. Receive telephone, radio, email, and automated fire alarm/computer communication and relay all communications. Record data and update FACC maps, boards, logbooks, and other media. Communicate/relay response data with Federal, State, and local agencies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Knowledge of hazards associated with aircraft and structural firefighting.
  • Knowledge of proper agent selection and conditions for use.
  • Knowledge of steps involved in pilot egress procedures, various equipment required for egress and different types of egress.
  • Knowledge of entry techniques, search patterns, and victim removal.
  • Knowledge of forcible entry equipment.
  • Ability to perform, at a minimum, first aid on a victim.
  • Ability to perform daily and after-operation inspections.
  • Ability to operate fire, crash/rescue vehicle in a safe manner.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance on vehicle.
  • Computer skills such as MS Word, Excel, e-mail, etc.
