The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) is an executive branch agency in charge of operating and regulating the use of state parks, state lakes, recreational grounds, wildlife areas and sanctuaries, fish hatcheries, natural areas, historic sites and other lands, waters, and facilities for the promotion of public health, safety, and for the use and pleasure of visitors. The agency is also charged with the development and conservation of wildlife and the natural resources within the state. The agency oversees 29 state parks, 500 miles of trails, approximately 460,301 acres of leased or owned public lands, management of four hatcheries, and four nature centers.

To meet our mission, projects, and goals, KDWP employs approximately 466 full time employees and up to 350 temporary employees, throughout the state, with diverse and varying skillsets. The largest agency office is the Operational Headquarters in Pratt, Kansas. The Office of the Secretary is maintained in Topeka, Kansas. There are three Regional Offices located in Topeka, Wichita, and Hays; three District Offices in Kansas City, Chanute, and Dodge City; and a Research Office located in Emporia, Kansas. Various wildlife, public land, and parks offices are located across the state.

KDWP has an annual budget of $110 million for Fiscal Year 2024. The agency is primarily funded through license fees, grants and federal funds that are provided through the Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson Acts.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary: This unclassified, full-time position is located at the Meade Fish Hatchery, Fisheries and Wildlife Division; and is directly supervised by Jason Vajnar, Hatchery Manager.


Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
The incumbent is responsible for repairs and maintenance on plumbing, electrical that includes 110v up to 3 phase 480V, basic carpentry, and mechanical systems associated with the Meade Fish Hatchery; system components include a variety of pumps, propane and diesel generators, filtration, valves, alarm, aeration components, all road vehicles and motorized equipment; maintains records on components requiring scheduled maintenance and vehicle maintenance and usage reports; maintains grounds to include pond dikes, fish harvest kettles, distributors, raceways, lawn and landscaping, roads, all hatchery buildings, water cisterns; responsible for general inspection and maintenance of these structures, to include required plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, dirt work, concrete work, and welding; constructs, fabricates and modifies fish culture equipment; operates welder, cutting torch, plasma cutter, carpentry tools and associated power and hand tools; assists with routine fish culture duties on a frequent basis which includes activities such as fish feeding, harvest, fish distribution or related activities; conducts or assists with other specialized work assignments on and off the culture facility, as assigned by the hatchery manager; participates in Department educational endeavors, or work at other fish production facilities; serves as lead worker for seasonal/temporary employees assigned to maintenance projects. Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required.

Licensing & Certification: The successful candidate must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license and pass a background check.

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required. Education may be substituted for experience as determined by the agency.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants with experience in mechanical, building, electrical trades. Prefer candidates who possess a working knowledge of facilities/infrastructure maintenance to include intermediate experience in electrical, construction, welding, and plumbing trades; working knowledge of fish culture/handling; an extensive first-hand experience for institutional facility upkeep and maintenance, and basic understanding of noxious weed control.

Necessary Special Requirements: Successful candidate will be required to earn and maintain a Kansas Commercial Pesticide Applicator License or License from reciprocating state within one year of employment.
