Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
The Kansas Soldiers Home, a state veterans home located in Southwest Kansas, is currently seeking a full time Physical Plant Supervisor Senior. This position is responsible for the administration and supervision of services related to the maintenance of a large, aging and complex physical plant covering an excess of 700 acres and 100 buildings which are utilized for residential, medical, administrative and mechanical support services.
As the Physical Plant Supervisor Specialist, you will:
- Supervise, evaluate and inspect work performed by maintenance staff;
- Formulate, design and prepare cost estimates for construction and/or renovation of facility projects;
- Oversee all projects to ensure efficiency, accuracy and completion within timelines and budgets;
- Prepare the annual maintenance budget for capital improvement projects, equipment and personnel needs;
- Formulate policies and procedures governing the overall operation of the maintenance department;
- Be a liaison with outside agencies responsible for licensure and adherence of the physical plan to various regulatory and safety standards and compliance.
Qualifications:
Education
- High School education or equivalent
Six years of experience in the mechanical or building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Licensing & Certification
- Valid Drivers License
- Prefer journey license in electrical work
Minimum Qualifications
- Six (6) years’ experience in building trades or mechanical building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

- To live on grounds of KSH in housing provided as position is on-call 24 hours a day; 7 days a week.
Preferred Requirements:
- One year experience with supervision of general and/or skilled maintenance workers,
- One year experience with safety and regulatory inspections.
Required Knowledge and Abilities (Summary):
Knowledge of:
- Methods, practices and materials used in large-scale maintenance, repair, custodial, grounds work and power operations;
- Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in physical plant operation, maintenance and repair work;
- Modern principles and practices of public or business administration;
Ability to:
- Make plans for repairs, alteration and additions to a large physical plant operation;
- Engage in long term planning and prepare budgetary estimates relative to capital, personnel and equipment costs;
- Interpret and prepare comprehensive reports
- Supervise, direct and coordinate the work of numerous employees.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements
- As authorized by the 2018 Kansas Legislature, effective July 1, 2018, K.S.A. 75-4362 is amended to designate all positions with the Kansas Commission on Veterans’ Affairs office, to include both the Kansas Soldiers’ Home and Kansas Veterans’ Home as Safety Sensitive positions and subject to the drug testing program. All applicants with a conditional offer of employment on or after July 1, 2018, shall be required to submit to a drug screening test.
