The School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration at The University of Akron (https://www.uakron.edu/dtaa/dance/) seeks a dance practitioner who will help ground UA Dance in forward-thinking theories and practice. This position is a fulltime, permanent non-tenure-track Assistant Professor in Dance. Successful candidates will have expertise teaching one or more dance
forms including, but not limited to: Hip-Hop, Jazz, African, Afro-Fusion forms, Contemporary, urban dance forms, Indigenous, Latino, Asian, or other dance forms. This position will start August 2025.
Required Qualifications
The School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration is part of The Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences and has a long history of excellence in performing, professional practice, and teaching. The University of Akron offers degrees in BFA in Dance, BA/Business Cognate in Dance, and a dance minor, and is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD). In addition, the program offers a unique partnership with the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City in a collaborative BFA in Dance. UA is also home to the National Center for Choreography (NCCAkron), one of two choreographic centers in the United States. The Dance Program has 7 state-of-the-art dance studios, technology-enhanced classrooms, a design lab/studio, training room, physiotherapy, and locker room facilities. Required Qualifications
- MA, MFA, or Ph.D. in dance or related field
- Experience in teaching or performing within their specialty or in a university or professional setting
- Teaching or performance expertise at the regional or national level
- Professional experience in non-Western dance genres
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to the expanding perspectives within the dance program and university
- Ability to assist with the coordination of the dance area
- Experience with curriculum development, fundraising, and/or student recruitment
- Ability to choreograph, stage, and produce student concerts
- Demonstrated clear and consistent communication skills
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues with diverse artistic, aesthetic, and philosophical viewpoints and practices

Additional Position Information
The successful candidate is expected to be able to:
- Teach major-level technique courses (beginning to advanced) of their genres
- Teach dance majors courses in topics such as dance history, dance education, choreography, and theory, depending on the needs of the program
- Choreograph or restage works for student performers and produce campus concerts as needed
- Recruit and retain high-level undergraduate students
- Contribute to the continued development and success of the department through leadership in service and teaching
- Support and promote the continuing growth and development of outstanding academic curricula in undergraduate programs
