Position Summary : The University of New Mexico is seeking a tenure track Professor of Music Education with specialization in Instrumental Music. This Assistant Professor will teach courses in instrumental music education, foundational music education and other undergraduate and graduate courses according to the candidate’s expertise, supervise student teachers and pre-student teaching interns, advise graduate research, and participate in recruitment activities. This faculty member will establish / maintain a research profile in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. They will work to build positive, collaborative relationships with music educators in the metropolitan area, throughout the state, nationally, and internationally. This faculty member will work collaboratively with faculty in applied instruction, music education, and ensembles to create an inclusive environment. In addition to the calculable load, the faculty member will contribute to School, College and University service, including committees, recruiting, and community outreach.

Qualifications :

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Doctorate in Music, Music Education, or Education, required by August 2025.
  • Three years of instrumental music teaching experience at the middle or high school level.
  • Two years, or more, university-level teaching experience in the capacity of graduate assistant or above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Excellence in university level teaching experience as demonstrated by the CV, teaching philosophy statement, videos, references and experience.
  • High-level expertise (teaching ability, musicianship, and scholarship) related to instrumental music education in the public school setting.
  • Expertise in music education beyond traditional band and / or orchestra, which might include vernacular music, jazz, mariachi, world drumming, etc.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities as demonstrated by diversity statement and CV.
  • Commitment to scholarship and a vision for future research activity as detailed in the application materials and interviews.
  • An understanding of and ability / desire to teach asynchronous online courses.
  • Teaching has been informed by contemporary issues in instrumental music education, e.g., inclusive / expansive / relevant approaches to repertoire selection, effective modeling of evidence-based instruction & pedagogy, a vision for equitable access to instrumental music education in public schools, etc., as demonstrated in the CV, interview, references and application letter.

This statement should also describe the candidate’s past demonstrated actions that have promoted diversity, equity and inclusion. Quarterfinalists will be notified by November 15, 2024 and asked to submit the following materials by January 1, 2025 : 1. Names, titles, current phone numbers, and current e-mail addresses of 3-5 professional references. 2. A .pdf document containing links to a recent (within the last three years) 20-minute video of candidate teaching a university-level instrumental music education methods class. Semifinalists will be asked to participate in a 30-minute phone or video interview and references will be contacted. Finalists will be invited to campus where they will : 1. Interview with the Search Committee, the Chair of the Department of Music, and the Dean of the College of Fine Arts. 2. Teach a 30-minute lesson in the Instrumental Music Methods course to music education majors. 3. Give a 30-minute research presentation. 4. Have a 20-minute rehearsal opportunity with one of the university concert bands or orchestras. 5. Meet with UNM faculty, staff and students. Only complete applications will be considered. INTERVIEW : Two or more finalists will be invited to the University of New Mexico to interview and audition for the search committee and administration as well as meet students and faculty.
