Job Summary
The Director of Residence Life will provide innovative leadership in developing and managing a residential community that aligns with the institution’s missions and goals. The director will look to enhance a thriving residential community focused on student success, engagement, and university collaboration. The director will oversee the recruitment, training, and management of the residence life staff. Additionally, the Director will participate in university and system-wide committees and be actively involved or willing to engage in regional or national professional organizations.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
- Provide innovative leadership focused on the growth and development of a residential community that aligns with the mission of the institution and emphasizes the significant impact housing and residence life have on a thriving and engaged campus.
- Hire, train, and lead professional and paraprofessional staff who align with the goals and outcomes outlined in the University Strategic Plan.
- Oversee housing assignments, residence life programming, departmental initiatives, retention efforts, and collaboration with other departments to further the mission and goals of the University and Division, directly impacting student engagement.
- Manage the development of significant annual housing budgets and ensure the effective use of departmental resources.
- Ensure occupancy target goals are met.
- Formulate and implement rules and regulations governing resident life at UT Tyler.
- Perform administrative tasks, implement and interpret University policy, and lead departmental strategic planning, assessments, reporting, and evaluation of programs.
- Collaborate with campus and community partners to ensure UT Tyler is meeting the needs of resident students.
- Maintain daily working relationships with the management of corporate-owned University housing and other contracted student housing properties.
- Support student success efforts through cross-campus collaborative initiatives and serve on university and system-wide committees.
Required Education/Experience
- Master's Degree.
- Five years of progressive experience in Student Affairs; with at least 3 in a supervisory capacity.
- Experience with assessment and making data-driven decisions.
- Experience in developing or enhancing a Residence Hall Association.
- Demonstrated experience working with various stakeholders, including but not limited to campus partners, and external community members to enhance the residential experience.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Master’s degree in student affairs or a master’s degree in business administration, finance, or accounting.
- Experience leading the development of facilities, student engagement initiatives, and programming models.
- Prior experience working in University System.
- Leadership within a regional or national professional organization such as, ACUHO-I, SWACUHO, NASPA, ACPA, ASCA.
Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
- Willingness to work with nontraditional office hours, including late nights and weekends, with varying work hours to meet institutional and programming needs.
- Collaborative, team-oriented leadership style.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
