General Purpose: The English Teacher (Grades 7-12) is responsible for providing students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to develop academic excellence, virtue, and leadership.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Subject matter knowledge
- Knowledge of one or more of the following:
- Classical literature including Ancient Hebrew, Greek, and Roman literature (Greek mythology, Bible as literature, Homer, Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides, Cicero, etc.)
- American literature including the Colonial Period, the Revolutionary Period, American Romanticism and the American Renaissance, the Civil War and the post-war period, as well as fiction, poetry, and drama from the early 20th century to the present (Edwards, Crevecoeur, Bradstreet, Franklin, Twain, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Steinbeck, Poe, Emerson, Dickinson, Whitman, Cummings, Frost, Eliot, Miller, etc.)
- British and World literature (Anglo-Saxon period, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Restoration and the 18th century, the Romantic Period, the Victorian Period, and the 20th century) and other European literature, world myths, and folktales (Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Pope, the Romantic poets, Dickens, Wilde, Solzhenitsyn, Dante, etc.)
- Knowledge of Standard English usage and composition
- Characteristics of the different genres of literature
- Various schools of literary criticism
- History and structure of the English language
- Knowledge of the rules and conventions of standard written and spoken English
- Rhetoric and composition
- Principles of classical rhetoric
- Modern and contemporary theories of rhetoric
- Similarities and differences between oral and written communication
- Reading theory, research, and practice at the middle and high school level
- Faithfully implements curriculum.
- Manages classroom climate and operation.
- Promotes achievement.
- Meets professional responsibilities.
- Other duties and responsibilities as needed or assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree, preferably in English or Literature, with at least 36 semester hours in content area
Experience:
Prior teaching experience preferred but not required.
Experience with AP and Honors English preferred.
