Veterinary Technician Assistant

Veterinary Assistant Job Responsibilities:

Veterinary assistants help veterinarians, vet techs and other veterinary professionals care for those animals they are working with. Furthermore, the tech assistant plays a vital role in ensuring that the veterinary practice remains clean during its operation. Although tech assistants do not carry out veterinary procedures themselves, no veterinarian could practice his or her craft without the help of one or more veterinary, technician assistants.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION BASICS –

• Regularly clean the veterinary facility, ensuring that it remains in a sanitary and attractive condition.
• Clean and sterilize the animal enclosures in order to prevent the spread of communicable diseases and provide a pleasant living environment for the clinic’s patients.
• An important part of their duties is maintaining the practice’s veterinary equipment in a sterile condition. This is extremely important in order to prevent postoperative infections.
• Feed and water all animals that are currently under their care, ensuring that the dietary instructions provided by the veterinarian are followed.
• Exercise and walk the animals.
• Assist in running laboratory work (Heartworm tests, fecal set up, ear cytology, blood machines, etc)
• Perform some tests, such as x-rays, under the supervision of a veterinary technician.
• Administer any medications that the veterinarian has prescribed and a veterinary technician has double checked or asked you to do.
• ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS –
• Noise exposure from barking dogs and machinery.

• Danger of being bitten or scratched.
• Exposure to various risks including but not limited to; toxoplasmosis, gas anesthesia, chemotherapy drugs, radiation, drugs and chemicals under OSHA, rabies and euthanasia drugs as well as compassion fatigue.

HOUSEKEEPING– Keep treatment/surgery/exam rooms clean and sanitary. Keep lab equipment well maintained, be sure cages are cleaned on all surfaces, counters, refrigerators, bathrooms, floors and general environment are kept up to hospital standards. The surgery suite is to be kept extremely sanitary and closed – walls are washed down regularly, all surfaces disinfected and supplies and crash cart kept stocked with updated non expired supplies. Be prepared to perform routine kennel duties including walking, feeding, medicating, scrubbing, mopping, and laundry

MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES– Learn the veterinary software thoroughly and basic document preparation. Prepare referral forms, x-rays for shipment, x-ray badge maintenance, police the building and grounds automatically as you walk through, notify management of any damage or necessary repairs, be always observant of client satisfaction needs, report any client concerns to management immediately.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
