Responsibilities:
The Clinical Assistant Resource Team (CART) Trainee is a non-exempt clinical position responsible for performing medical assisting duties in a healthcare setting, under the direction of a licensed Clinician. The CART Trainee will be trained to provide clinical support services including but not limited to direct clinician support, patient care functions, and administrative tasks. The CART Trainee will be trained to cover at multiple locations in the laboratory, medical assistant (MA) clinic, and huddles to be able to provide high-quality patient care. The position may require travel between facilities to provide coverage.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Over the course of up to a 6-month training period, the CART Trainee will learn the following duties and responsibilities which may include but not be limited to:
  • Processes incoming and outgoing calls/messages in an independent and professional manner using basic clinical judgement, seeking advice as needed
  • Performs patient intake, obtains necessary patient information to file and update patient records, and ensure all forms and consents are completed by patients
  • Performs pre-encounter prep prior to patients visit, including identifying open care gaps
  • Supports and demonstrates effective and professional communication with patients, family members, visitors, and colleagues
  • Gathers patient data through interview and observation
  • Assists the clinician during medical treatments, examination, and procedures
  • Prepares patients for examination, performs and documents vital signs, and records patients' health history and medication reconciliation.
  • Check-out patients, assist with referral processing, and arranges laboratory and/or other ancillary testing
  • Performs duties and skills consistent with a trained certified medical assistant/registered medical assistant/licensed practical nurse.
  • Prepares and sanitizes equipment, examination rooms and instruments.
  • Manages inventory of medical supplies and equips exam rooms with appropriate supplies.
  • Embraces and participates in quality initiatives, goal attainment, and collaborates on clinical process improvement activities
  • Provides routine treatments and administers approved medication per clinician order.
  • Documents patient data, treatments, procedures, and patient education in accordance with The Villages Health and department specific policies.
  • Assists the clinician by acting as a liaison on behalf of the patient to schedule, provides patient with scheduling information to obtain testing, and/or physician consultation.
  • Maintains compliance with all The Villages Health policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates competency in specific tasks and skills as defined by the practice.
  • Other duties as assigned
Education/Experience Requirements:
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Experience working within a healthcare setting preferred but not required.
  • CMA/RMA: Maintains current Medical Assistant certification/registration from an accredited institution or LPN: Current nursing license in the State of Florida renewed every two years (CART Trainee will have 6 months to obtain licensure/certification and must possess to graduate from trainee status)
  • Maintains current BLS Healthcare Provider Certification
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development and continuing education
  • No supervisory responsibilities
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

During the course of the up to 6-month training period, the CART Trainee:
  • Will learn and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and have the ability to assess data appropriate to the age-specific needs of the patients
  • Will learn and demonstrate knowledge of basic medical terminology
  • Will learn and demonstrates awareness of medical/legal issues, patient rights, and compliance with standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies
  • Will learn and demonstrate knowledge of basic medical assisting skills
  • Will learn and demonstrate knowledge of personal and patient safety practices and adherence to infection control standards outlined in The Villages Health policies
  • Will learn and demonstrate a working competency of skills consistent with a trained clinical assistant (CMA/RMA/LPN) not limited to but including:
    • Manual vital signs
    • EKG
    • Nebulizer treatments
    • Point of care testing to include but not limited to: PT/INR, glucometer, respiratory screening (Flu/covid/strep), urinalysis (clinitek), monofilament foot testing, IRIS scan, pulmonary function 3 testing (PFT)
    • Phlebotomy and specimen collection and processing
    • IV fluid administration
    • IM/SQ medication administration
    • Intradermal testing
    • Sterile field set-up
    • Pap/pelvic exam set-up with specimen collection and processing
  • Will display the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients and other external parties in a courteous and friendly manner
  • Will display the ability to be detail-oriented and highly organized, with ability to prioritize effectively
  • Will learn the ability to efficiently navigate electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Will demonstrate basic computer skills
