JOB SUMMARY:
The Senior Tax Accountant is responsible for the Company’s tax compliance, strategy, planning and accounting for income taxes. The successful candidate will work with our outside tax consultants, executive management team, and taxing authorities in carrying out his or her responsibilities. They will advise the company on how to minimize tax liability, remain current on any tax law changes and ensure compliance with various taxing authorities.
EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
Preferred: Advanced degree in accounting is highly desired.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Minimum 5-10 years progressive tax experience
Preferred: 3-5 years of public accounting experience with a focus in tax.
POSITION REQUIREMENT(S): Specialized Skills/License/Certification
Required: Must have strong computer, problem solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills, be an effective communicator, work well under time constraints, and demonstrate a high degree of professionalism. Expect a strong working knowledge of US tax law, and knowledge or willingness to learn various state, local and Canadian tax laws.
Preferred: High degree of discretion dealing with confidential information. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member. Commitment to continuous learning, exhibit a sense of urgency, commitment to quality, and the timely completion of duties.
CORE COMPETENCIES (Essential Job Functions)
- Responsible for review of federal and state income tax returns prepared by outside accounting firm.
- Assume responsibility for all entities for local/state filings as entities add new locations and assist with Voluntary Disclosures as identified.
- Responsible for accounting for income taxes (SFAS 109).
- Responsible for audits of federal and state income tax, state and local filings, as well as review and resolution of tax notices.
- Assist CFO with estimating and monitoring annual tax cash requirements.
- Liaison with operating management on tax issues and accounting staff on accounting issues. Interface with Human Resources on unemployment claims.
- Research and develop tax-saving strategies, advises management regarding effects of business activities on taxes, and implements appropriate tax-tracking processes.
- Conduct independent research of the statutes and ordinances imposing sales, use, telecommunication, and other special taxes.
- Completes special projects upon request and other duties assigned.
- Monitors statutes, legislative activity, and tax publications to stay abreast of changes in laws and advise Executive management.
- Ensures that establishment complies with periodic tax payment, information reporting, and other taxing authority requirements.
- Reconcile tax accounts on financial statements.
- Departmental liaison with IT staff on all technical matters relating to tax applications.
- Responsible for sales tax, personal property tax, annual reports, and business/gross receipts filings for all entities/states including all related analysis and support.
- Responsible for 941s, FUTA, SUTA, and state withholding returns/reports (monthly, quarterly, annually as needed).
- Other duties as assigned.
