Summary
This position is primarily responsible for setting up and facilitating production for the Shavers by completing tasks such as pulling and hanging animal skins, assisting in turning faces, removing toe bones, and working alongside Team Leaders to ensure efficient production efforts. This position also assists Chemists with their responsibilities and is responsible for grinding elephant feet, crocodiles, and alligators.
Essential Functions
- Pull and hang animal skins for Shavers
- Pull re-shaves
- Pull first shaves ahead and have them ready to hang (check often with Team Leaders so they NEVER run out of skins)
- Check soaks to see if they have enough water and the hides are under the water
- Keep aisles clean and clear (sweep, empty out carts, empty out strainers, organization)
- Help pull soaks for Chemists as needed
- Help pull drums for Chemists as needed
- Help throw soaks in as needed (60 to 65 degree water)
- Turn faces and take out toe bones with a scalpel
- Grind elephant feet, crocodiles, and alligators
- Weigh and put finished first shaves back into the drum and turn on Auto, unless it’s static, bears, or fine fur. In that case, run a few times around and leave it off
- Check the pickle and tan checklist before adding skins to drum, vat, or barrel
- Make pickles, re-pickles, and washes as needed
- Assist with making tans
- Assist shaving, as needed
- Operate forklift
- Follow PPE Policy
- Abide by the hazard communication program and understand the chemical information sheets

Preferred Education and Experience
- High School Diploma
- 2 years tannery experience
- Chemist Experience
Required Education and Experience
- Must be 18 years of age to work on shop floor of tanning industry
- If electing to use a respirator, must be able to obtain medical approval to do so
Physical Demands
This job requires the ability to bend, stand, and lift. Must be able to stand for extensive periods of time and perform repetitive motion. Lifting requirements are classified as Heavy Work. 25-50 pounds of force will be exerted frequently and 50-100 pounds of force occasionally.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time hourly position. Standard weekly hours are Monday through Friday 5:00am – 1:30pm. Shifts may vary per management discretion. Voluntary overtime is occasionally available, and mandatory overtime is sometimes required daily after 1:30pm.
