Summary:
The Fire Watch Shelter Worker is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of residents, staff, and property by monitoring for potential fire hazards and enforcing fire safety protocols within a homeless shelter environment. This position involves regular patrols, identifying and addressing fire risks, responding to emergencies, and maintaining a safe living space for all occupants. The ideal candidate has a strong attention to detail, knowledge of fire safety practices, and a commitment to serving vulnerable populations.
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular fire watch patrols throughout the shelter, inspecting for fire hazards, blocked exits, and non-compliance with fire safety protocols.
- Ensure all fire exits, extinguishers, and alarm systems are accessible, operational, and compliant with safety standards.
- Respond promptly to fire alarms or potential fire incidents, assisting in evacuation procedures as needed.
- Monitor resident and staff activities to ensure adherence to fire safety regulations, including safe use of appliances and restricted smoking areas.
- Collaborate with shelter staff to educate residents on fire prevention, emergency evacuation plans, and fire safety procedures.
- Document and report safety violations, fire hazards, and incidents to supervisors in accordance with shelter policies.
- Participate in regular fire drills and assist in coordinating evacuation procedures to ensure preparedness.
- Perform light maintenance tasks related to fire prevention, such as clearing obstructions from fire exits or replacing expired fire extinguishers.
- Work with local fire department officials to ensure shelter compliance with fire codes and regulations.
- Provide support during emergencies, assisting residents with special needs and ensuring all individuals are accounted for during evacuations.
- Maintain a calm and professional demeanor in high-stress situations, using de-escalation techniques when necessary.
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions to stay informed on shelter policies and fire safety regulations.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certifications in fire safety, emergency response, or a related field is a plus. Previous experience in fire watch, safety, security, or a similar role, preferably in a shelter or community setting. Knowledge of fire safety practices, fire prevention techniques, and emergency response protocols.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify and address fire risks proactively.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to educate and interact respectfully with residents and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Physical ability to conduct patrols, respond to emergencies, and assist in evacuations if needed.
- Ability to remain calm and act decisively during emergencies or high-stress situations.
- Basic computer skills for incident reporting and documentation.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles and working with vulnerable populations is preferred.
- Availability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
