Why We Need You
The Manager of Operations, Centers for Public Science Learning, is responsible for bringing cutting-edge scientific content to life in compelling ways for local, national, and global audiences on-site, in classrooms, and online.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Strategic Initiatives and in partnership with the three Center for Public Science Learning Directors, this individual will lead a team that both serves as a science content conduit to the community (Academia, Industry, Government, and Public) and oversees project execution, including strategic planning, resource allocation, grant-writing and fundraising, communications, partnership management, and support for convenings.
With your scientific background and communication expertise, you'll play a critical role in identifying and developing innovative learning experiences by working with Center Directors to source cutting-edge science content and collaborating with Museum colleagues to translate complex scientific ideas for public engagement. Through strategic leadership, compelling science communication, and effective project execution, you'll ensure the success and impact of the Centers in delivering "science at the pace of change."
What You’ll Accomplish
- Strategic Content Development and Project Execution:
- Oversee the development and execution of public science learning products, tracking progress and ensuring scientific accuracy and engagement value
- Proactively identify emerging scientific trends and translate them into compelling learning products (includes developing novel products for the Museum)
- Organize team meetings and collaborate with the Senior Director, Strategic Initiatives to manage resources and coordinate Center projects to enable alignment with broader Centers and Museum strategy
- Resource Management:
- Manage budgeting, assigning, tracking, and reporting of staff time and funding for public science learning initiatives
- Plan the necessary staff and funding resources to support Center activities and coordinate with cross-Divisional Museum teams, as needed, to plan
- Team Leadership and Development:
- Manage, hire, train, and mentor a team of 2-3 Program Associates and Coordinators with emphasis on building science communications capabilities
- Delegate, assign, and monitor team work to ensure alignment with Museum and Center scientific and strategic goals
- Develop a team capable of translating complex scientific concepts for diverse audiences
- Science Content Pipeline and Product Management:
- Coordinate the lineup of upcoming products and experiences from the Centers, collaborating with Center Directors, senior leadership, and production teams
- Work with Center Directors to identify and source cutting-edge science content, and collaborate with colleagues to match those ideas to the most effective engagement formats
- Build and nurture partnerships, with experts and institutions, in collaboration with Center Directors, to ensure the Centers access cutting-edge scientific content
- Ensure the production of diverse learning experiences and products across multiple channels
- Fundraising and Grant Management:
- Manage grant needs, including conceptualization, submission, and implementation, and collaborate on grant writing
- Partner with the Advancement team to meet fundraising goals and manage the team's funding needs
- Communication and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Create compelling communications for staff, board, donors, and the community that highlights the work and impact of the Centers
- Manage Center webpage content and partner with Marketing, Public Relations, and Advancement teams to enhance visibility and fundraising efforts
- Support the Centers Advisory Groups' communications and activities
- Logistical and Operational Support:
- Provide logistical support for various Center activities, including panel development, travel arrangements, stipends, and event planning and coordination
