GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
Under the direction of the Director of Human Resources & Safety, the Environmental Health & Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and executing EHS programs and procedures along with continuously assessing performance through audits and inspections to verify TFI USA policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best standards. He/she will play a critical role in driving a proactive culture in creating a ‘safety first’ mindset and an injury free work environment, leading initiatives, and achieving industry best performance. This role will be based in our Swedesboro facility but will work closely with remote locations to ensure safety measures are in place. The EHS Manager will also work closely with our Sustainability Director providing support on initiatives for TFI USA and will help to centralize the facility’s requirements through a single channel. He/she will provide day-to-day onsite safety support to all employees, developing and providing ongoing safety trainings and team huddles to discuss safety protocols in each area of the business.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote and foster a ‘Safety First’ culture throughout the facility; utilize ongoing reminders to staff, signage, emails, etc., to keep safety at the forefront
- Develop safety initiatives throughout the business and lead the charge on implementing these initiatives and be the project manager for all safety initiatives for the business
- Develop new, and update existing, safety policies for the facility working closely with the management team and spending time in each department of the business to understand the work being completed and what safety concerns exist
- Develop and implement EHS policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, TFI USA rules, and best management practices
- Conduct safety trainings with staff, regular safety inspections throughout the facility and address safety concerns with appropriate personnel
- Lead the Safety Committee including organizing facility walkthroughs, delegating tasks, and addressing safety concerns with department leaders in a timely manner
- Develop a companywide safety training plan by researching available safety trainings both onsite and online, proposing an annual safety training budget, and providing safety training regularly
- Create, and update existing, training documents in our training system, Alchemy
- Handle tracking of all trainings for staff, keeping copies of certification documents on file and ensuring recertification is completed as required (forklift training, first aid, etc.) • Conduct regular walkthroughs of facility to monitor actions of staff and address unsafe practices
- Compile a fire extinguisher log and ensure third party vendor certifies all of them during quarterly inspections
- Develop a recognition program for safety to reward staff for working safely
- Support sustainability efforts for the business, providing input on initiatives and driving action items throughout the facility
- Provide first aid to any injured worker and file worker’s compensation claims with our insurance carrier as necessary
- Be the point person for all workplace injuries/incidents, ensuring incident reports are completed, reviewing all documentation submitted, investigating the injury/accident, and recommending corrective action to be taken
- Update the injury/incident reporting forms, as needed, to ensure accurate information is being obtained after an incident
- Track injuries/incidents on the Safety Log; provide PowerPoint slide to the Director weekly to present at the Sr. Management meeting
- Act as the point of contact for the security team, third party vendor, and liaison with the supervisors at the security company provide safety training for new guards
- Assist with planning staff/office events to include recognition for positive safety trends in the workplace
- Collect pH samples from outdoor area surrounding facility; ensure compliance with township standards
- Keep the first aid kits stocked and ensure there are sufficient kits throughout the facility
- Assist with other safety projects and tasks as requested by management, within scope and ability
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, safety management, occupational health or related field required
- 3 – 5 years of experience in a safety focused role; previous experience in EHS required
- 1 – 2 years of experience in a safety management role and managing direct reports required • Certified in safety training, first aid, CPR, AED required
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations for General Industries required.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to navigate through the programs within Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint creating presentations
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze a problem and develop an action plan
- Self-starter, able to take on tasks and follow through completion
- Detail oriented, results driven, strong time management skills
- Fluent in English (speaking/writing/reading) Preferred
- OSHA Certification preferred
- Ability to understand and appropriately influence company strategy as related to EHS compliance and program implementation
- Experience with Alchemy training program preferred
- Ability to take ongoing training courses related to Safety, OSHA, etc.
- Experience developing and presenting trainings to groups of staff
- Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred
- Experience participating in Safety Audits and response preparation preferred
