Role: Substitute School Counselor

Reports to: Principal/Director of Student Services

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing a developmental counseling and guidance program considering the school's needs.
  • Conduct individual counseling in areas of educational and personal need as referred by staff, family, or self-referral.
  • Individualized Consultation with students, student appraisal, and advisement to help students plan, monitor, and manage their own learning;
  • Provide support in the development of Behavior Intervention/Correction Plans
  • Plan, prepare, and conduct small group counseling in data driven; identified areas.
  • Assist with preparing and submitting notices to parents for students who are in danger of not being promoted.
  • Cooperate in compiling and maintaining appropriate student records.
  • Assist with registration and placement of new students and schedule changes.
  • Assist with evaluating transcripts of incoming and transferring students.
  • Assist as a resource to homeroom advisors and assist in the homeroom advisement process.
  • Assist with classroom activities to support instruction, educational transitions, career paths, and personal development.
  • Assist with Large group, classroom, and school-wide curricula designed to align to Georgia's workforce readiness and outcomes;
  • Provide information on careers and life development to students and parents.
  • Assist with administration of standardized group testing.
  • Assist with routinely analyze student/school academic, behavioral, and referral data to evaluate the effectiveness of the school counseling program.
  • Assist with consulting and coordinating with staff, parents, and community resources.
  • Assist in implementing crisis management plans.
  • Assist school based MTSS teams in reviewing discipline data and identifying the mental health and behavioral needs of students
  • Assist MTSS Coordinators in coordinating interventions with students related to social-emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns
  • Assist in providing follow-up and implementation of reintegration plans for students who are returning to school from hospitalization and/or facility stays
  • Assist in completing risk assessments and securing home/mental health.
  • Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignment.
  • Review current development, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance and the ability to adapt to an extended/flexible work schedule.
  • Ensure adherence to good safety procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, School Board policies and administrative directives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for coordinating and maintaining 504 students and the required documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Hold or be eligible for required certification - Master's or higher degree in School Counseling (LPC, LCSW is acceptable); proper certification as required by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • High integrity, excellent character, and good professional reputation.
  • Abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
  • Ability to be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Ability to perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
  • Must be able to properly and consistently supervise students particularly during emergency situations.
