The Chief Estimator is a key leadership role responsible for managing and overseeing our estimating team, ensuring accurate and competitive bids, and serving as the primary point of contact for customer relations. This individual will review contract specifications, manage project estimates, and create detailed internal budgets to support the company's strategic and financial goals.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
- Support efforts to build personal relationships with peers, key decision makers of existing and potential clients, and architectural and engineering firms.
- Attend industry-related networking events, client activities, and charitable functions, even outside work hours.
- Develop and maintain current knowledge of industry activity, trends, and competitive information.
- Complete prequalification packages.
WORKLOAD MONITORING
- Monitor the capacity of Field Operations and align future projects with capabilities.
ESTIMATING
- Find and select civil concrete jobs to bid on.
- Perform job walks to observe any field conditions that could affect the construction and the prospective bid.
- Identify any inconsistent issues, conflicts, and other problems in the bid documents.
- Prepare RFI questions to resolve conflicts and problems in order to ensure RFI responses, or lack thereof, are contemplated in the final proposal.
- Review and evaluate bids prepared by team members.
- Meet with customers / clients to discuss bid status, present proposals, negotiate bids, and present / solve issues.
- Keep company management, project managers, clients, and all others involved in a project up-to-date on bid progress.
- Perform research to develop ways to reduce overall project costs.
- Attend estimating, sales, and project meetings.
- Participate in project post-mortem meetings to identify successes and opportunities for improvement.
- Ensure that pricing and labor unit assumptions are up to date.
- Ensure that Three Brothers Concrete commitments are met.
PROJECT LAUNCH
- Prepare Field Operations to execute by communicating project details and customer expectations.
- Help set up projects across different technology platforms ahead of project start.
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution.
- Prepare and present reports, proposals, and cost analyses to senior management and customers.
VENDOR AND SUBCONTRACTOR RELATIONS
- Foster relationships with vendors and subcontractors to establish lower pricing for products or services.
- Request material, equipment, and services quotes. Review the quotes to confirm their accuracy and adherence to the request.
- Stay current with new products, means, and methods.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external parties to ensure clarity and alignment on project scopes and estimates.
CUSTOMER RELATIONS
- Serve as the main point of contact for customers, fostering strong relationships and ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Address customer inquiries, concerns, and requests promptly and professionally.
- Collaborate with sales and project management teams to align estimating efforts with customer needs and expectations.
CONTRACT REVIEW AND COMPLIANCE
- Review and analyze contract specifications and requirements to ensure compliance with project standards and company policies.
- Identify potential risks and challenges in contract terms and propose mitigation strategies.
- Coordinate with legal and procurement teams to address any contractual issues.
- Update subcontractor agreements as needed to comply with commercial insurance requirements.
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
- Continuously evaluate and improve estimating processes and procedures to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and consistency.
- Implement best practices and innovative solutions to optimize estimating.
- Stay updated with industry trends, technologies, and advancements in estimating methodologies.
TEAM MANAGEMENT
- Oversee and manage the estimating team, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure high performance and professional growth.
- Delegate tasks effectively, ensuring efficient workflow and timely completion of estimates.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to team members.
OTHER DUTIES
- May be called to perform other related duties.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business Administration, Architecture, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in estimating and business development with a concrete subcontractor, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry standards.
- Proficiency in estimating software and tools, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Professional certifications (e.g., Certified Professional Estimator, PMP) are a plus.
- Familiarity with ERP systems and project management software.
