Thurston County District Court is seeking a highly motivated, service oriented, positive self-starter for the position of Judicial Assistant. The Judicial Assistant is the dedicated judicial staff support to the elected judges and appointed commissioners of District Court. This position will have extensive knowledge and involvement with District Court judicial officers’ and Court Executive Officer’s programs, projects, and decision making. The Judicial Assistant provides administrative support to judicial officers and court executive leadership, and serves as a liaison, requiring extensive knowledge and skills, between judges, justice partners, county offices and departments, internal and external stakeholders, and members of the public.
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides administrative support to judges, court commissioners, court executive leadership, committees, and pro tem judges. Support may include composing correspondence on behalf of judicial officers, researching and responding to issues as determined, compiles data and drafts information for judicial use, maintains judicial files and records, and creates and maintains agendas and minutes for meetings as assigned.
- Performs a variety of coordinating activities for judicial officers to include managing travel arrangements, completing registration, reconciling expenses and reimbursements, scheduling meetings and appointments, preparing presentation materials, coordinating judicial meetings and trainings, scheduling of judge pro tem or visiting judges, and maintaining record of judicial leave and docket coverage.
- Calendars ex parte matters to be addressed in chambers, performs case write ups, manages court record in statewide case management system and local records management systems, and generates ruling correspondence. Maintains all ex parte requests, tracking them from entry to resolution.
- Develops and conducts in-depth research, collecting and analyzing data and information of pending or current issues and future trends. Prepares reports, charts, graphs, and spreadsheets as necessary. Prepares statistical and narrative reports on issues as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Environment – Work is performed primarily in an office environment, serving judicial officers, team members, and the public. Position may experience extended periods of sitting and/or standing. This is a team-centered environment.
- Schedule - Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Workload demands may occasionally require work outside the assigned work hours.
- Travel Requirements - Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or trainings. Customer Interactions - Daily interactions via phone, in-person, and video with members of the public, justice partners, and team members.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED and two years of college-level coursework in public administration, business administration, law, or another closely related area.
- Three years of progressively responsible executive assistant/secretarial experience, preferably in a court or legal environment.
- Ability to operate a personal computer with advanced knowledge and use of word processing, data base, publication, presentation; web maintenance and spreadsheet software applications.
- Current Washington State Driver's License or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation. Ability to type 60 WPM and operate standard office equipment.
DESIRED SKILLS:
- Knowledge of organization and operation of Washington State court system; procedures and practices within courts of limited jurisdiction; and legal terminology and reference.
- Knowledge of legal research techniques and the ability to draft legal documents and correspondence using correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. Excellent communication skills and methods. Ability to apply good judgment and discretion in dealing with staff members, the public, local and state officials, legislators, and the media.
