What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrical Estimator position at THUSA INC?
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Evaluate new bid opportunities for constructability and internal suitability.
- Summarize and present high-level scoping of potential projects to internal stakeholders for go/no-go approval.
- Visit project work sites, participate in pre-bid meetings, clarify scope of work, and prepare RFIs.
- Utilize project plans and specifications to identify scopes of work, assign crews, schedules, materials, and subcontracting opportunities.
- Interpret drawings and plans to create detailed material takeoffs.
- Create detailed cost estimates using HCSS Heavy Bid estimating software or internal worksheets, following the client's pricing format.
- Research pricing for estimates based on historical and regional costs.
- Develop self-performed estimates for trades that chooses to self-perform.
- Seek out specialty subcontractors and suppliers to fulfill project requirements.
- Work closely with subcontractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders to capture the complete scope of each trade and the overall estimate.
- Obtain current material and equipment quotes for estimates.
- Collaborate with other estimators and business unit leaders to develop strategy, competitive differentiation, and project understanding.
- Coordinate and lead estimate reviews with business unit leaders or other estimators to finalize estimates in HCSS.
- Develop preliminary bid schedules based on RFP information using MS Project software.
- Manage risk as part of the proposal preparation process.
- Prepare and submit written technical proposals and other bid documents, accurately addressing the project owners’ requests for proposals by the bid submission deadline.
- Lead small to medium estimates or components of large estimates and review all associated bid documents.
- Conduct detailed analysis of contract documents and specifications to determine and validate overall project requirements.
- Complete full quantity take-offs of all labor, equipment, and materials from project documents.
- Support the estimate lead by populating tender forms, generating RFIs, anticipating proposal requirements, and assisting in establishing construction schedules.
- Recognize risks related to project-specific requirements, site, schedule, and market conditions/constraints.
- Use contract terms to identify risks and opportunities.
- Assist with bid document control by documenting, organizing, and archiving all information relating to the estimate for successful transfer to the project team.
- Perform bid-day assignments and support other estimators to successfully close various scopes.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders, including lead estimator, regional managers, subtrade partners, and suppliers.
- Solicit competitive pricing from subtrade partners and suppliers for pursuit support.
- Establish a critical path schedule for the estimate/pursuit.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in related discipline or trade experience or equivalent. 4 years of progressive experience in construction cost estimating is preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of the Electrical Construction discipline and standards as related to design and documentation.
- Ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems.
- Ability to perform calculations required for estimating.
- Successfully estimated bids valued at up to $20 million in various delivery methods.
- General construction knowledge; understands specifications, drawings, materials, and methods and procedures.
- Intermediate knowledge of key principles involved in bid preparation; including quantity takeoff procedures and systems, subtrade partner procurement, pricing, interdepartmental functions, general expense philosophy and bid-closing procedures. Understanding of compensation models, market conditions, business trends, internal historical information, and competitors.
- Be familiar with different bid delivery methods: hard bid, guaranteed maximum price (GMP), unit price, design-build, target prices, and cost reimbursable.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with stakeholders including the ability to solicit subtrade partners and suppliers.
- Working knowledge of HCSS Heavybid estimating software, advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite and a strong aptitude for adopting new technology. .
- HCSS (Heavy Bid Software), MS Project, and Excel strongly preferred.
- Experience identifying and presenting alternative delivery methods, or value engineering preferred.
- Strong prioritization and organizational skills
- Flexibility, sense of urgency, and the ability to multi-task.
- Highly productive and willing to manage a busy work schedule independently.
- Strong verbal and written (technical) communication and presentation skills.
Work Environment:
- Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
- Regular office environment expectations.
- Sitting at least 80%
- Standing, walking and bending at least 10%
- Infrequent travel to job sites may be required. In those circumstances there are the following industrial environment expectations:
- The environment may include minimal exposure to hazards typical of an industrial job site
- Personal protective equipment is required when on job sites, including hard hats, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and – as needed- respirators, gloves, and other required protective equipment as needed.

Pay: $115,000.00 - $134,000.00 per year
