Job Description


Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Academic Strategic Initiatives supports and serves the vision of Tidewater Community College to be an institution that is student centered, community engaged, and globally innovative. The position helps to promote that vision throughout the college, the Virginia Community College System, and within the college’s service region.
The Associate Vice President for Academic Strategic Initiatives provides direct administrative support, council, assistance, and collaborative efforts on a variety of operational and planning projects/tasks for the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The position provides leadership and oversight for the Office of Apprenticeships and Employer Partnerships and ultimately supports the teaching and learning mission of the institution. The AVP for Academic Strategic Initiatives also provides support and communication to the Pathway and Discipline deans based at the campuses and serves as a faculty liaison to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The AVP reports directly to the college’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and is part of the Office of Academic Affairs leadership team. Working collaboratively with other college-wide vice presidents and Pathway Deans, the AVP for Academic Strategic Initiatives helps the college achieve its mission and annual goals.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Perform as a team player supporting the mission and goals of the Office of Academic Affairs in teaching and learning.
2. Collaborate with Pathway and Discipline Deans to achieve the academic mission of the college through frequent communication, campus visits, and planning sessions.
3. Collaborate with the Pathway and Discipline Deans, provide continual review and input into the schedule of courses for the fall, spring, and summer terms.
4. Develop and provide data analyses to support Program Prioritization and the college-wide strategic plan.
5. Oversee the annual development and implementation of the Faculty Staffing Plan.
6. Oversee the annual development and execution of the Equipment Trust Fund.
7. Provide oversight and approval of all adjunct faculty contracts. Also serve as a liaison to adjuncts.
8. Assist with communication as a faculty liaison to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
9. Provide input and leadership into the annual Perkins Plan, academic program viability, and performance-based funding initiatives.
10. Collaborate with the Director of Marketing to ensure that deans participate in advancement and public relations activities.
11. Collaborate as needed with the Executive Director of the TCC Educational Foundation and the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs to acquire external funds for the institution.
12. Collaborate with Workforce Development to ensure program alignment.
13. Perform other functions, at the direction of the Vice President, as needed for the benefit of the college.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications

1. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university is required, earned doctorate is highly preferred.
2. Progressively responsible higher education work experience in leadership positions, preferably within a community college.
3. Proven leadership in a multi-campus environment, preferably as an academic dean or other academic administrator.
4. Demonstrated experience and excellence in data collection, budget, and personnel management.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary theories and practices affecting student services and academic programming.
6. Experience with regional accreditation standards as well as specialized accreditation, certification, and licensure requirements.
7. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply college policies and procedures; ability to provide guidance and resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.
8. Demonstrated commitment to the community college philosophy, mission, and its student access and success agenda.
9. Demonstrated ability to excel and provide leadership among diverse constituents, to make oral and written presentations, to communicate effectively while establishing cooperative working relationships, to work with ambiguity, and to operate with shared responsibility, while having a sense of vision and humor.
