Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Associate Vice President for Academics is a member of the college-wide team charged with positioning Tidewater Community College as an academic leader among the nation’s community colleges. The team is responsible for creating and sustaining a learning environment that meets the highest expectations for effective teaching and successful learning through highly qualified, inspired, and inspiring professors and staff deeply focused on student success. To that end, the Associate Vice President for Academics (“AVP”) is responsible for curriculum development and implementation, general education assessment of student learning, academic program viability reviews, and the development and review of articulation and transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities. Working with academic deans/directors and faculty and using data and analytics, the AVP is responsible for providing college-wide leadership to foster student learning and the integrity of the college’s academic programs and policies.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide overall leadership and coordination for academic program development, and for the development and implementation of course and program development policies and procedures.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and deans in assessing student learning in general education competency areas, analyzing data, disseminating information, and recommending action as needed to improve effectiveness of the general education programs.
- Provide leadership and coordination for college catalog development and the college’s online curriculum portal.
- Serve as primary liaison with the college’s Curriculum Committee and the Virginia Community College System with respect to programs, policies, and procedures related to academic policy and academic program effectiveness.
- Provide oversight for a systematic review of effectiveness and productivity of academic programs and courses.
- Research, plan, write, and implement academic policies and procedures for the college that are based on nationally recognized best practices, and improve the quality and delivery of academic programs and services.
- Serve as ex-officio member on a governance committee as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer, to represent and liaise with the District Academic Affairs Office.
- Provide leadership for developing and maintaining effective transfer and articulation agreements with four-year colleges and universities.
- Work collaboratively with members of the Vice President’s staff on a variety of special projects.
- Supervise assigned staff, including setting appropriate expectations and evaluating performance against those expectations.
- Submit required reports in a timely, complete, and accurate manner.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the Vice President.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Master’s degree in a related field from a regionally accredited college or university. Doctorate preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Tidewater Community College’s vision, mission, goals, and objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a highly effective working team; to supervise assigned staff; to effectively communicate and work with a wide range of internal and external partners and stakeholders; and to make effective oral and written presentations.
- Extensive experience in higher education administration, particularly in the areas encompassed by this position, with demonstrated results in managing people and tasks in a highly complex work environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of curriculum development.
- Demonstrated understanding of project management, academic program review, and evaluation and assessment of student learning.
- Familiarity with and experience developing and implementing academic policy.
- Teaching experience, preferably at the community college level.
