Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
The part-time Case Manager provides direct, non-counseling support services and educational programming to TCC’s most economically and academically vulnerable students, helping them to close resource gaps and overcome barriers to their personal, professional, and academic success. Specifically, the part-time Case Manager will serve as the on-campus point of contact for the Student Resource and Empowerment Center, providing hands-on benefits screening, advocating for students as they navigate the complex web of social services, campus, and community resources, following up with students as they access services, and documenting students’ progress toward their goals. The part-time Case Manager will also offer educational programs that holistically empower and engage students in their current and future personal, academic, and professional endeavors.
Functional Responsibilities:
Promote and represent SREC on campus by collaborating with campus partners to participate in programs that support TCC students’ progress toward achieving their personal, academic, and career goals.
Serve as the campus point of contact for the Single Stop program, promoting and representing the program on campus, assisting with developing and maintaining efficient office procedures for student basic needs assessment and screening, and ensuring student access to campus and community programs, services, and public benefits programs.
Assist students with navigating the application process within social and human services agencies and organizations, advocating for students as needed.
Provide ongoing, holistic support for student wellness, case management, and follow-up to ensure that students are accessing all available resources and making progress toward their personal, academic, and career goals.
Maintain up-to-date information and collaborative working relationships with local social and human services agencies, community services, and faith-based organizations.
Assist students with requests for emergency financial assistance, promoting the program on campus, fielding requests, collecting documentation, and communicating with students throughout the process.
Accurately collect, document, and report program usage data in a timely manner using established processes.
In coordination with the SREC team and in collaboration with campus and community partners, support programming to address topics related to personal empowerment, financial self-sufficiency, academic success, wellness, interpersonal violence, sexual assault, stalking, and healthy relationships.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Student Resource Center.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- In-depth understanding of case management in a human services or higher education context, including intake, needs assessment, screening, case documentation, and follow-up.
- Experience in assisting students in developing effective short- and long-term problem-solving skills.
- In-depth knowledge of local resources that support low-income, first-generation college students and experience in assisting students with the application and screening processes within social/human service organizations.
- Demonstrated understanding of the barriers to academic success faced by low-income, first-generation college students.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting educational programs that address personal, academic, and professional success.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize time and work independently in a fast-paced, student-centered office and make informed decisions based on local, state, and federal regulations and college policies, including Virginia Community College System (VCCS) policies, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Title IX, mandatory reporting laws, and other policies and procedures as they relate to student services and faculty support.
- Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills to disseminate complex information, policies, and procedures to students.
- Demonstrated ability to present and facilitate information sessions and workshops related to student success.
- Demonstrated digital skills, including efficient use of web-based applications, case management tools, student information systems, social media, etc.
