What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Materiel Management position at Tidewater Community College?
The purpose of this position is to creatively assess and meet the materiel management needs of Tidewater Community College, to actively support the College’s vision by providing our customers with comprehensive and quality materiel management services, to strive for continual improvement in the management process, to ensure timely and economical services in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. To plan, organize and direct the operations management of the centralized materiel management function of Tidewater Community College in accordance with Federal and Commonwealth laws. This involves a large number of programs in an organizational structure of dispersed divisions. The position oversees fixed assets for the college and is responsible for the college-wide inventory. The position will serve as the college Risk Manager ensuring compliance with all state requirements as well as filing all insurance claims.
This position has been designated an essential position. The employee filling this position may be required to report to work or otherwise fulfill the responsibilities of the position in the event of a college/ campus closure due to weather or other emergent condition(s).
This position will require a credit check.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of material handling, governmental purchasing, fixed asset accountability, inventory control systems, risk management, mail services, business practices and budgeting, and supervisory techniques required.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and direct a large diverse staff.
- Skills in the use of personal computers utilizing electronic asset management and inventory control systems, word processing, database, and spreadsheet software packages.
- Ability to manage and negotiate.
- Ability to plan and prioritize.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to advise and assist agency management in materiel management/procurement related activities.

- Virginia Contracting Officer (VCO), Certified Professional Public Buyer (CPPB), or Certified Professional Public Officer (CPPO)
