Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
The Free Market Assistant at TCC plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the Free Market, providing exceptional customer service, managing food inventory, supporting volunteers, and collaborating with campus teams to address food insecurity. This position is dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff.
Functional Responsibilities:
- Serve as the first point of contact in the Free Market, maintaining well-organized front-end operations, efficient check-in procedures, and superior frontline customer service.
- Assist teammates in stocking, storing, organizing, inventorying, and restocking perishable and non-perishable food items, including refrigerated and frozen products.
- Monitor, rotate, and discard perishable food inventory according to established Free Market procedures and food safety standards.
- Assist volunteers with scheduling, training, and service delivery in accordance with the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia’s established processes.
- Promote the Free Market on campus, including participation at college events and programs, providing information about the Free Market and the Student Resource and Empowerment Center services.
- Collaborate with the SREC Case Management Team to ensure students seeking support for food insecurity receive comprehensive wraparound services.
- Assist clients with using online registration systems.
- Ensure lobbies and seating areas are neat, and posted information is appropriate, relevant, and up to date.
- Contribute to creating a supportive, judgment-free, and welcoming environment for all users of Free Market services.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Knowledge of effective customer service techniques
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to lift and carry supplies and equipment weighting up to 50 lbs. on a frequent basis; prolonged walking, standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching
Ability to prepare and manage schedules.
Experience in data collection and report preparation.
Ability to work independently and organize workload.
Sound decision-making skills related to food inventory and service to students, faculty, staff, and the public.
