Position Description
Tilson is seeking CDL A Micro Trench Operator to join our newly established, long-term project in Las Vegas building out Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH). The ideal candidate for this role is enthusiastic, highly concerned with safety and quality, cares about the quality of their work. This position will operate various types of mechanical micro-trenching equipment including Tesmec CleanFast, Tesmec CityFast, Ditch Witch and Vermeer. Tilson’s Micro Trench Operator will be required to safely operate equipment around live utilities in the underground/telecom utility field. Candidate must have full knowledge of underground fiber install operations and must be a capable and proficient equipment operator in the telecom space. The ideal candidate will be safety focused, customer and quality oriented, with a strong work ethic and a positive, CAN-DO attitude.
Responsibilities:
- Lead by example, attitude reflects leadership. Lead through the understanding that the employees are the biggest asset Tilson has. Motivate individuals and Team to create a positive and highly productive work environment
- Operator a variety of the newest micro-trench machines, including Tesmec, Vermeer and Ditch Witch. City and Clean Fast Tesmec models experience preferred
- Trench, place duct, pull cable, and direct bury main-line and drops
- Perform restoration back to existing conditions
- At a minimum, the position requires a good working knowledge of telecommunications construction, familiarity with micro-trench machines, ability to use cable placement equipment and tools, ability to identify and troubleshoot problems
- Must be able to safely operate micro-trench equipment in and around congested neighborhoods where adults and children are present
- Ensure locates are correct and all underground utilities are identified and located before trenching or digging
- Safely and efficiently operate Tilson equipment involved in underground construction work
- Never dig around or near utilities without a spotter in position
- Constantly communicate with crew members
- Ensure potholes are dug and utilities are daylighted prior to crossing utilities
- Maintain accuracy in all reporting functions
- Assist with safety events and is constantly on the lookout for changing condition
- Assist Laborers with hand digging, potholing, handhole installation and restoration work when needed
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Crew Lead or Foreman
- Ensure equipment is in proper working order and that all systems are working correctly
- Performing basic upkeep and maintenance of the equipment and communicate any equipment malfunctions or repair needs with their supervisor
- Communicating with fellow team members using hand or audio signals, to ensure the safe operation of Tilson equipment
- Operate other hand and power tools of all types: power brooms, earth tampers, concrete saws, cement mixers, and various other equipment and tools
Position Requirements
Qualifications:
- Must have valid CDL A or B, tanker endorsement preferred
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
- Strong work ethic
- Entry level skillset with less than 3 years’ experience
- Must have good communication skills and a positive attitude
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment
- The ability to work safely, with or without supervision
- 0-3 years of experience operating underground construction equipment such as those describe above, required
- Must pass a pre-employment physical exam, DOT medical and drug screen
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- This job operates in a field environment. This role routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, and twisting. Also, working in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, rain, ice, and wind.
- The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position is physically active, with lifting required. Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
