Summary of Position:

The Safety Specialist is responsible for meeting the Safety and Risk Management needs of members and clients. The Association serves approximately 250 member companies. As the Association’s principal Safety and Risk Management resource, the Safety Specialist must timely and accurately provide advice and assistance in all Safety and Risk Management areas; including general safety and health consultation, facility and program audits, development and implementation of safety programs and policies, varied industrial hygiene services, Workers’ Compensation issues, performing safety related training programs, and assisting members in dealing with OSHA and state enforcement agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Within the limits of the bylaws and policies of the TPM organization and acting pursuant to the instructions of its President, the Safety Specialist is responsible for accomplishing the fulfillment of such duties as set forth below.

1. To serve as a consultant and resource person to member firms in all areas of Safety and Risk Management and to market, sell and perform “fee for service” safety consulting and training to members and non-members.

2. To exercise independent judgement in applying technical knowledge to Safety and Risk Management problems or situations presented by the members/non-members.

3. To assist member firms’ management staffs with research, interpretations and procedural matters as related to regulatory agency standards.

4. To assist member firms with regulatory compliance, investigations and resolution of alleged violations of regulatory agency standards.

5. To develop and conduct management/supervisor training and development programs to ensure member firms’ needs are met.

6. To be an effective team member and provide assistance to other association staff members, particularly in the Safety and Risk Management area.

7. To guide, coordinate and assist employers through regulatory agency disputes and serve as the employers’ advocate, if requested by the member.

8. To function as an advisor to members throughout informal administrative proceedings with the appropriate regulatory agency. (OSHA, MSHA, EPA and DEQ).

9. To maintain professional expertise and competency in all facets of safety and risk management through continuing educational opportunities; such as seminars and available literature and training within the industry. The Safety Manager shall remain active in supportive associations such as the American Society of Safety Engineers and National Safety Council and strive to attain leadership roles in such organizations.

10. To research and write special safety related articles and bulletins to educate management, supervisory and line personnel.

11. To participate and make presentations at various industry conferences and conventions on safety subjects to promote association, recruit new members.

12. To provide necessary assistance and guidance to members involving Workers’ Compensation. This includes primarily mitigation of claims disputes with the employer and its carrier. The Safety Manager will assist the member in developing sound return-to-work programs to reduce the overall claims costs. The Safety Manager will communicate directly with the adjudicators handling these claims.

13. To analyze current injury and illness records for the purpose of detecting any trends which may be developing in the members’ places of work. The Safety Manager must be able to compute injury/illness rates for the members and for the purpose of OSHA documentation.

14. To assist the President, as needed, with administrative functions that include but are not limited to: program planning, service delivery, service and program evaluation, staff development, publication editing, staff communications and new member/prospect visits and member recruitment.

Qualifications and Abilities, Position Competencies:

- B.S. Degree in safety and health or other closely related field is required. A minimum of seven (3) years applied experience. A professional designation, gained through the American Society of Safety Engineers or other safety credentialing organization is preferred. (i.e., Associate Risk Manager - ARM, Associate Loss Control Manager - ALCM, Certified Safety Professional - CSP)

- Must be a team player with a system focus. Must possess the ability to:

· Communicate both orally and in writing.

· Consult and advise all levels of personnel.

· Establish sound training programs and deliver the training professionally.

· Solve Safety and Risk Management issues for the members.

· Work as a self-starter and manage time professionally.

· Work with integrity and not breach the confidences of members.

· Lead by example and be highly motivated.

- Must possess a high level of technical knowledge regarding the rules and regulations established by state and federal agencies including OSHA, MSHA and state safety agencies.

- Software proficiency preferred:

· MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Front Page, Power Point, Outlook)

- The ability to meet out of town travel requirements is essential. Travel approximately 75% of the time to service members in the Northwest U.S. is a condition of employment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
