Job Description: The Museum Educator will coordinate, educate and create curriculum for k to 12 schools and youth groups. The person work with the Director and Education Committee. Work schedule is extremely flexible, and can be partially remote, but should include in person on days of group visits. Reports to the Museum Director.
Responsibilities
· Create new content-rich, inquiry and object-based educational programs aligned to the NYSED teaching standards for students K-12 based on the Museum exhibitions, mission and 1930s Lost Catskill Farm.
· Work directly teaching students or assisting volunteer educators with teaching.
· Evaluate current educational programs and create and implement new materials as needed, ensuring their compliance with current best practices and alignment with NYSED teaching standards.
· Outreach to public schools, private schools and youth groups in the tri-county area and beyond. Develop and nurture relationships with schools and groups.
· Coordinate and keep accurate schedule of school visit dates.
· Train volunteer museum educators.
· Explore the possibility of offering new types of k-12 programs, such as online programs and in-school visits, create new programs.
· Create and maintain a detailed database with information on all schools.
· Help with setting-up and breaking down program areas and materials before and after programs.
Qualifications: The person should be self-motived and creative, with an interest or knowledge of local history and love of museums. The preferred candidate will have experience in k – 12 teaching or museum education, including the creation of curriculum for k – 12 students. The position requires good problem-solving, organizational and interpersonal skills. It is critical that the candidate be punctual, reliable and responsible, with a personable and helpful attitude and able to work well with a diverse group of volunteers.
The position requires moderate physical activity including climbing stairs, carrying education materials and moving about the site in hot summers and cool spring and fall weather. It is a year round, part-time position, 15 hours per week, in-person, starting at $22 per hour.
