POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, the School Behavior Specialist is responsible for providing comprehensive behavioral and attendance intervention services across our K-12 district charter school. The School Behavior Specialist will work in collaboration with teachers, administrators, and support staff to implement behavioral interventions, crisis management strategies, and support for social-emotional learning. Additionally, this role will focus on addressing chronic absenteeism and supporting the development of strategies to improve both attendance and behavior across the school community. The goal is to foster a positive, supportive, and productive school environment, ensuring that at-risk students receive the necessary support to succeed academically and behaviorally.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implement a continuum of behavioral support services, using social-emotional learning programs, crisis intervention strategies, and individualized support plans. Support the implementation of preventative practices and restorative strategies to address behavior proactively.
- Teach, model, and support the implementation of defined positive social expectations across the school. Acknowledge and encourage positive behavior through various recognition systems.
- Collect and analyze data on student behavior to monitor progress, identify trends, and suggest continual improvements to the current behavior management system.
- Meet with teachers and students to create and support individualized behavioral contracts and action plans aimed at addressing and improving behavior.
- Provide comprehensive attendance intervention services in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. Disseminate information to identify and refer students for attendance support services, working collaboratively with school-based and division-level attendance teams.
- Counsel parents, guardians, and students on both attendance and behavior concerns. Regularly consult with school social workers, psychologists, counselors, families, and students to address issues affecting student success.
- Work with multidisciplinary teams (including attendance and improvement teams) to develop and support the implementation of mental health and attendance supports for students.
- Arrange for consistent consequences for problem behavior while ensuring that these consequences are applied fairly and consistently, fostering a sense of responsibility in students.
- Lead the implementation of restorative practices that promote accountability, respect, and relationship-building among students.
- Present regular updates on attendance and behavior progress to school leadership and administrators. Follow up on individual cases, including implementing tiered interventions, conducting home visits, and ensuring consistent communication with families.
- Mediate peer conflict situations among students, promoting conflict resolution strategies and fostering positive peer relationships.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians of students exhibiting at-risk or repeat behaviors. Provide guidance on how they can support their child’s behavioral progress and reinforce school expectations at home.
- Investigate and address bullying complaints, working with students, staff, and families to resolve issues and ensure a safe and respectful school environment.
- Support efforts related to drug awareness, smoking, vaping, and other health-related concerns as it relates to student behavior that can negatively impact students' physical and emotional well-being.
- Lead and participate in ongoing professional development related to behavioral management, mental health strategies, attendance improvement, and social-emotional learning. Provide training for school personnel, families, and the community on chronic absenteeism and intervention planning.
- Collaborate with school-based teams, including social workers, counselors, and special education staff, to provide individualized support for students with behavioral challenges.
- Provide immediate support for students experiencing behavioral crises using de-escalation techniques and, when necessary, physical restraints in accordance with safety protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of behavioral data, interventions, and attendance-related cases. Prepare monthly reports for school leadership, ensuring compliance with school and district requirements.
- Support the development and implementation of tiered intervention strategies for students with varying levels of behavioral and attendance needs, ensuring timely access to appropriate support services.
- Demonstrate cultural proficiency and sensitivity in addressing diverse student needs. Strive to ensure that behavioral and attendance strategies are equitable and accessible to all students.
- Serve as an attendance case manager, maintaining all records related to attendance interventions. Follow up with families, monitor case progress, and ensure consistent communication.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
- Knowledge of evidence-based interventions for adolescent health.
- Knowledge of Response to Intervention model.
- Ability to prepare social histories.
- Knowledge of community resources, preferred.
- Ability to demonstrate effective liaison relationships with parents, schools, and agencies.
- Familiarity with applicable federal, state, and local requirements to ensure legal compliance.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with others in both verbal and written format.
- Ability to think on one’s feet, multi-task while juggling multiple priorities, reach consensus, and create culture of collaboration and accountability.
- Ability to appropriately handle confidential information in accordance with district policies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and an ability to use technology as it relates to the job responsibilities. Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities as evidenced by course work, educational or related experience, professional activities and/or the interview process.
- Documentation of a clear BCI.
- Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Executive Director may find appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Licensed clinical social worker/therapist preferred.
- Two to four years of experience in a similar role.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
$65,000 - $75,000 per year based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include healthcare, paid vacation, personal days, paid holidays and 403B retirement plan.
