Summary Of The Position
Tishman Speyer is seeking to hire an Engineering Assistant to join our team at our One Federal Street, Boston property. The Engineering Assistant will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing facility equipment on all systems. The Engineering Assistant is expected to demonstrate technical expertise in one craft area (e.g, Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, and Fire/Life safety) while being skilled in others. Engineering Helper is responsible for maintaining health and safety standards while creating a welcoming environment for our customers (tenants), visitors, and the community. The Engineering Assistant is required to be a current member of Chapter 3, National Conference of Firemen and Oilers 32BJ, SEIU, or must become a member in good standing within 30 days after their date of hire.
Key Responsibilities
The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, building equipment and tools. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock. (Note: Should under no circumstance work on any 480 volt electrical system unless he or she has been properly trained.) The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Must be knowledgeable in safety aspects of any function before performing any task in that area.
This role is compensated at union negotiated rates. This role is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, as well as access to our comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, life and disability insurance, 401(k) plan (with matching contributions), wellness benefits and all other benefits afforded to full-time Tishman Speyer employees.
The base wage reflects a number of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, skill sets, and/or licensure required of an individual in this particular role. The base range is also specific to members of Tishman Speyer’s One Federal Street team, as wages are determined by Chapter 3 NCFO 32BJ, SEIU contract.

Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate the facility in accordance with all applicable government and regulatory requirements.
- Identify, enforce, and assess safety hazards and risks.
- Record readings and make adjustments to ensure proper operation of equipment.
- Review monthly Service Request summaries to pinpoint and correct recurrent operational problems.
- Participate in incident investigations.
- Perform maintenance and monitoring reports to the mechanical, plumbing, structural, control, and fire, life and safety systems to keep building systems up to applicable standards.
- Maintain HVAC systems and equipment at optimum levels (e.g., cleaning, inspecting, and changing parts).
- Respond to tenant inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Assist Building Management team with emergency situations (e.g., fire alarms, chemical spills, hazardous conditions) and take appropriate actions.
- Comply with departmental policies for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Maintain a clean and safe workplace.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Passion for maintaining health and safety standards while creating a hospitable and welcoming atmosphere.
- Ability to perform all work using the proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
- In strict accordance, ability to perform all applicable safety policies, procedures, and practices.
- Have thorough knowledge of building systems and their respective operating sequences, strategies, and best practices.
- Demonstrate aptitude for and/or mechanical systems, as well as computer-controlled equipment.
- High school diploma or state equivalent educational certification
- Minimum of two years of college or related trade schooling.
- Minimum of four years’ experience in HVAC central plant operations.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision and as a productive member of a team.
- Basic computer skills necessary including working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook and Word)
- On-site presence is required for this position. Shift is to be determined, but weekend availability will be required.
- Ability to travel between floors, buildings, and rooftops including frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, stooping, and working/extending overhead indoors and outdoors with varying temperature ranges from 0 - 100 .
- Walk on large building floorplates.
- Work at heights with A-Frame and extension ladders from 5ft to 16ft using buddy system and following all OSHA guidelines and safety precautions.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, following all OSHA guidelines and safety precautions.
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
- Must be able to stand for an extended period, at a minimum of 8 hours.
- Must be able to move, lift, carry, push, pull, place objects less than or equal to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Ability to understand and communicate in English, verbally and written.
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment that may be required when performing Engineer Helper tasks safely, such as but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses, splash-resistant face shield, welding helmet, welders’ gloves, all-purpose work gloves, chemical-resistant gloves, disposable gloves, face mask for infectious disease control, nuisance dust mask, hearing protection, standard impact-resistant safety shoes with non-slip soles, and electrically-rated safety shoes.
- Wear fall prevention/protection equipment when working at heights over 4 feet in areas without guardrails, or when performing other non-ladder work at elevations, or when working in permit-required confined spaces where retrieval equipment is required, including but not limited to body harness and lanyard in addition to other required Personal Protective Equipment.
