Who We Are

Baltimore City Teaching Residency (BCTR) has been in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools for over 20 years to prepare individuals without teaching certification to become exceptional teachers for Baltimore students. BCTR Residents play a critical role in breaking down the socioeconomic and racial barriers that have denied our students access to an equitable education. Through Baltimore City Teaching Residency, you will elevate your academic and professional expertise into a high-impact career as a certified K-12 teacher working in Baltimore City Public Schools.

  • Early Childhood Education (PK-3)

Benefits of Teaching in Baltimore

  • Trusted Program: For over 20 years, the Baltimore City Teaching Residency has prepared more than 2,200 teachers who have helped transform City schools. Despite recent progress, the need remains great – more than a third of students still do not graduate on schedule. Principals and district officials value Residents’ talent and commitment and trust they will continue to play a key role in promoting educational equity for Baltimore students. Our partner schools serve as the Residents’ employers.
  • Classroom-Centered Preparation: Residents prepare to enter the classroom by participating in a six-week training experience. Where traditional teacher preparation leaves little time for hands-on skill-building, our innovative training is centered around actual teaching experience in summer school classrooms. Fellows practice core skills that they need to be successful on their first day of teaching and ground their pedagogy in culturally responsive teaching.
  • Full Salary and Benefits: Once hired, you will be a full-time employee of Baltimore City Public Schools and will earn the same starting salary as any other first-year teacher. You will start as the teacher of record beginning the 2025-26 school year. Starting salary is approximately $55,000 plus comprehensive benefits.
  • Certification: During the first year in the classroom, Residents earn certification through our program which includes coursework and individualized support that builds on the skills mastered during training. Residents are recognized not simply as “certified teachers,” but as having a proven track record of classroom success. The tuition of $7,000 is payable throughout the year once Residents start receiving a full-time salary. In addition, various schools offer full or partial tuition reimbursement and the opportunity to apply for TNTP's AmeriCorps program that includes an award up to $7,395 for education related expenses or previous student loans.
  • Black Educator Excellence Cohort (BEEC): Understanding the diversity gap in teaching, the BEEC offers the opportunity for participating Baltimore City Teaching Residents to build community and fellowship with other BEEC members. This network of Black educators aims to limit feelings of isolation and to tackle issues that impact Black teachers more than their peers while working towards a more inclusive and impactful educational environment. Cohort members will receive tuition assistance, certification exam support, and networking and fellowship with a community of new and established Black educators.
