What are the responsibilities and job description for the Conservation Head-Starting Technician position at Toledo Zoo?
Our Conservation Department is currently seeking Part-Time Head- Starting Technicians to handle daily care and husbandry of our captive head-starting collection including Blanding’s Turtle, Copperbelly Watersnake, and Allegheny Woodrat. Work will be based at the Toledo Zoo but may require occasional travel. Work-related mileage will be reimbursed. This position reports to the Director of Vertebrate Conservation, is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act, requires a minimum of 24 hours worked and may require work on holidays.
Job Category: This role is temporary, Part- Time and expected to run from January 2025 until completion of the head-starting projects (dates TBD).

- Daily feeding, cleaning, and care of the captive conservation collection.
- Collecting accurate data, including weights, measurements, feedings, etc.
- Attention to detail, especially pertaining to the head-started animals.
- Weekly collection updates to supervisor.
- Training and supervising teenage volunteers or staff, and,
- Additional Zoo-related tasks as required.
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must have a valid drivers’ license and be insurable by the fleet insurance carrier.
- Demonstrated knowledge of focal species
- Must be able to work independently in the absence of immediate supervision
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment
- Dedication to accurate and thorough data collection
- Self-motivated with a positive attitude
- Respectful and professional in interactions with other team members, partners, and the public
- Must have the ability to lift 50lbs

- Bachelor's degree
- Prior husbandry experience with focal species, specifically turtles and snakes.
- Previous work with teenage volunteers or community outreach.
