WASTEWATER / SEWER LINE OPERATOR
Minimum Rates: Operator I $23.55 (Grade 11, Step 3)
with opportunity to promote to Operator II (Grade 12), Operator III (Grade 14), and Operator IV (Grade 15)
Position includes premium pay for on-call duty and call-outs
Tooele City's wastewater sewer collection line team maintains the 130 miles of sewer lines beneath our City.
During a typical day you will perform preventative maintenance to keep lines operating and functional. You'll operate two machines nicknamed the "Flamer" and the "Jetter" to vacuum out or use high pressure hoses to break debris up and push it through the line. You will also operate equipment with mounted camera systems to survey the underground lines, test flow levels, and keep records.
Occasionally, you'll respond to calls of back-ups in homes or businesses and will help identify the cause of the back-up. If it is the City's portion of the line, you'll help clear the blockage and provide exceptional customer service to help our citizens understand the remediation and claims process with the City. Occasionally you will enter manholes to clear blockage.
Tooele City provides you with appropriate personal protective clothing to protect you from skin contact with sludge or wastewater. The smell may be a challenge for some people. The job is physical in nature and requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Some of the other required qualifications include:
- Possess and maintain a valid Utah State Driver License (or obtain within 1 month) and a driving record acceptable to Tooele City's insurability and risk management standards. Must obtain a Class B CDL and valid medical card within twelve (12) months of assignment and maintain them.
- Become Utah Certified Level I Water Reclamation Operator within one year of assignment to position (or next reasonable testing period as specified by the supervisor).
- Be able and willing to respond to emergency call-outs within the time periods specified in City or department policies which may limit residency options. Must be able and willing to service in an on-call rotation that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
