What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chaplain - Per Diem Days position at Torrance Memorial Medical Center?
The Chaplain provides emotional and spiritual support, guidance and counseling to patients, families, significant others and members of the healthcare team.
Core Competencies
Provides emotional and spiritual support, guidance and counseling to patients, families and significant others by referral from physicians, nurses, volunteers, and other members of the healthcare team.
Works within a multi-faith context.
Provides emotional and spiritual support, guidance and counseling to other members of the healthcare team when requested by the individuals.
Supports staff and volunteers through difficult and traumatic care-related situations. Provides personal guidance through times of crisis and/or refers staff appropriately to other caregivers within the hospital, the Employee Assistance Program, or the wider faith community (based upon staff preference).
Understands other faiths, cultures and spiritualties.
Exercises initiative and professional judgment within the prescribed areas of responsibility and authority.
Works collaboratively with social workers, volunteers and other Medical Center staff in establishing priorities for assessing patient/family/significant other/staff needs; planning and implementing interventions; and subsequently evaluating the effectiveness of the interventions.
Encourages and enables them to visit members of their communities when patients/families/significant others indicate a desire for this.
Interfaces with faith community leaders to maintain a bond with the Medical Center in meeting the spiritual needs of our patients.
Serves as an active member of assigned Medical Center committees such as the Palliative Care Committee, Ethics Committee and Home Health Hospice Committees.
Participates in appropriate spiritually-based conferences and patient-focused activities in the community.
Serves as a teacher to other members of the healthcare team and volunteers in understanding how to meet the needs of patients of varied faiths, cultures and spiritualties.
Adheres to the code of professional ethics.

Masters - Theological training degree
College Level Coursework ACPE - Clinical Pastoral Education (4 Units)
